Is it illegal to walk in a locksmith shop and order 6 keys cut to code of choice? Would the locksmith be breaking the law if he cut my keys to my code?My first attempt failed and was just wondering?

joking The trick is to make friends with
your locksmith, be honest, tell him what your
doing. If you are sincere and presentable,
you should be o.k., if you have no luck, find
another locksmith.

*My one fear about bumping is that is a bit
to tempting to the criminal element, but as it has
had international coverage, none given by us, I
don't see the harm in re-iterating common info.

I see now harm in selling me a product that I want. It is not breaking any laws that I know to buy a key cut 9,9,9. I think of it like buying a gun. The dealer can not be held liabal for what is done with the gun after he sells it like the laws tell him to? If ( am I will not ever) go and use it to commit a crime, that would be my ass in trouble not his. I have watched the video on bumping and want to pratice it and see how it works.Thanks for your comments. I will go looking for another locksmith.I sure wish keys could be ordered and delivered to your house. Too much to ask for I guess.

Illegal? No. Unethical? Maybe. You could always re-pin your front door lock to all 9 pins and ask a locksmith to come out to your place and impression you a key.

With that said... if it is discovered that a locksmith supplies locksmithing tools (ie bump keys) to someone that commits a crime, you can expect a statement of 'no-liability' to be promptly ignored by the prosecution.

The trick isn't just to make friends with a lockie, make friends with one who has key machines for high security locks

You can make your own bump keys by ordering a bunch of blanks from sites like www.mysecuritypro.com and carefully file down each key to code by using identical keys like for your front door or something after figuring out what depth each cut is on your house key or whatever.
Or even easier, go to http://www.locksmithvideoschool.com/loc ... tools.html. They sell sets of depth key for most residential locks and they'll even get you a set for other locks thats not listed on the site if you e-mail them about it. Not sure if you need to purchase one or more locksmith courses/videos to be able to buy it though.

If you go to a locksmith shop and order six keys cut by code (which is perfectly legal anywhere) expect to pay a premium. Also, if your inference is to get 999 keys, expect to be met with a harsh look and likely harsh words (and no keys).

With all the news stories that have gone on about bump keys, and the industry in general being relatively "tight" I wouldn't expect a warm reception.

There are other ways of making them though, and I'd suggest looking those over before running down to the local locksmith shop.

What you can try doing is goto one locksmith and get a key cut to code with maybe 2 or 3 9 depths then goto another locksmith and get the 9 depths where they arent on the 1st key. Then goto home depot or somewhere that wont care too much and ask them to use the same blank to cut both keys... And always save a copy of the original bump key to make copies...

That sounds like a good plan to try. Thanks for the suggestion. I like that plan a good bit.I am off tomorrow afternoon., and will try to see what I can get done.This hurricane is bearing down on us here in the south, so I may have to wait till later this week, we'll see.

Carrying on with the gun analogy: If a store can be held liable if you buy or even steal a gun from it, and if a locksmith can be held liable for providing you with tools which are subsequently used in the commission of a crime, does that mean that they're both liable if you steal a gun from a store and point it to a locksmith's head to persuade him to give you some bump keys you then use to commit a crime? Just trying to figure out how exactly US criminal law works

Hmm. The burglary victim could sue the locksmith. The locksmith could sue the store that let the crazy obtain the gun. The crazy will go to jail, be let out in a few months and only the lawyers win.
