Kryptonite Padlock - Not Tubular

Postby major » 11 Aug 2005 1:58

I just recently got introduced to the world of lockpicking by the folks at Irvine Underground / Lockpicking101 at DEFCON13. I picked up a set of tools and since already started prowling stores for locks. I have sucessfully picked everything that I have come across so far (nothing exotic), except for this one Kryptonite padlock. This is not one of their tubular/bicycle locks, but a standard padlock.

So far I can get upto 3 pins (that I can hear release when I pull the tension wrench), and it's not always the same 3. It seems to take a LOT of tension to get some pins, while others will only set with a very little tension, while some won't seem to set at all.

Does anyone know anything about this lock or have any suggestions?
Any pointers on this are appreciated.

Try varying the tension while you pick. If you've set one or two pins and after that it feels all weird and the remaining pins dont seem to set, try letting one pin you've already set drop back down and work your way back up again. This always works for me when the pins seems bind or set in a random pattern everytime i try to pick it. You can also try raking the lock.

That padlock might have mushroom pins in it, they hinder picking alittle try lifting all the pins befor you put any preasure on the tenstion wrench.

There's a second hand hardware store on roosevelt in the U district that sells old locks for CHEAP, though I don't remember the name. Shomer -Tec in Bellingham has cool practice locks, though it's bit of a drive. If you need any local info for this hobby, lemme know, as I've been around that track a few times. I don't live in Seattle anymore (I'm in Kansas with the military for a few more months till they're done kicking me out,) but I'm more than happy to help you get off to a good start.

Do some of the pins seem to get stuck and not want to move at all?

If you havent picked security pins before you might want to try something easy like a brass fortress 40mm (at walmart and target) just to get a feel for them.
