im new to lock picking i want to know about this lock pick

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

SouthOrd is a good, well known brand for quality.

That set has four picks and a tension wrench.
(Hook, diamond, ball and rake).

VERY VERY basic set, and it IS able to open most locks,
like they say, but they are not 'skeleton keys' or
magically injected with an opening potion.

They need skill to use, otherwise they are just bits of metal.

Take a look around the site for the uses of each pick
and decide for yourself, but it is a VERY basic set.

I bought this set before and it does a pretty nice job. It is as previously said a basic set, and for 10 bucks more you could probably get an even better set. Don't let the book persuade you into buying this set because it is VERY basic and runs through the various types of locks with minimal descriptions. The information provided here and across the net, surely surpass that booklet.

Hope this helps.

This is the set that I started with and I was happy with it. I ended up giving it to my girlfriend. The book is helpful too, just dismiss the part that it says about a rubber band for tension. :D

This is the first set I got years ago, they are great in my opinion. The edges are a bit rough but you can sand them out if that bothers you. If youre just starting out and arent up to making your own yet but dont want to spend lots of cash id really recommend these.

i started off with a set very similiar to this as well. Just remember what Barry Wels said "Start off cheap because you will bend/break your tools". I would say go with the set so you can practise your skills and go from there. Maybe after you master most pin locks, then go spending your money on more specialised tools.

That set of picks is perfect for someone who is just starting up...

don't bother with books when you are beginning as the MIT guide, whilst being a touch difficult to understand at times will serve you better than most other books - i have tried the other basic books myself and have found them to be less helpfull (personal view)

By the time you have learnt to pin-by-pin pick locks reliably you will really want to make your own picks, if only for the experience. When you get to this stage i believe Pyros has some very good videos regarding manufacturing picks... Customising lockpicks will give you a sense of accomplishment and really give you a drive to increase your skills!

I believe this post accomplishes two things: I haven't used SMS talk once, and I submitted something usefull (hopefully) without ruining a post

Good luck as well mate :D

That is a good starter set but I would file the circular pick down to a half circle, as then it is the best pick in the set for most cheap padlocks.

Remember that if a lock does not open it is usually less force that is needed!
