First set of homemade picks.

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

First set of homemade picks.

Picks and Tension Wrench

Picks made out of carbon steel hacksaw blades, tension wrench made out of a street sweeper bristle. Made with a dremel tool and some sand paper. Haven't gotten anything to polish them properly with.

Comments, Critques?

Can you edit your posts here?

Forgot to mention, I know theres a couple of dinks in the metal, they're gonna go away once I find some good files and sandpaper. Highest I have right now is only 320. I read somewhere here that 600 is good for polishing, PX dosen't have the biggest selection and it's hard to find hardware stores where I am. :?

Go to an auto supplies shop and get some 1000 or 2000 grit paper.
that and a bit of water/spit is great.

My problem is I'm stationed out of Okinawa, Japan right now and due to my rank I'm not allowed to own a car so it's kind of hard to find any kind of hardware places. I'm pretty much stuck with the bad selection our PX has. :?

Heres a picture of them, I put a link to them in my first post but it's kind of hard to tell.

E-3's and below in the Marine Corps aren't allowed to own cars over here. :( Various reasons, the main one being idiots who messed things up for us in the past. Also all non-NCOs also have a midnight curfew regardless of age and you can't go off base alone . Once you pick up Corporal all that goes away.

Nice. Might find those hooks a little stout; also might find it a little bit bothersome to have them all dangling on a ring, unless you pull them off to use.

Is the very right pick meant to be an extractor, or a half diamond? It looks like an extractor to me on the photo. If it's meant to be a half diamond the slopes should be steeper and symetric, like
Code: Select all
______________/\
----------------------'

On the other hand, it looks like you put some thought into your picks, so it's likely you already know. I think the handles might be short a bit, and of course some finish with 600 grit sanding paper won't hurt. But all in all you have a really nice set of picks which will open you most locks (given you have the skills ) As a last suggestion I'd say: make some more tension wrenches. It's a huge difference whether a tension wrench fits perfect into a keyway or not.

enjoy picking and keep making picks

If you cant own a car... I hight doubt that the Military wants you to have a set of lock picks.. I'd be very careful to keep them as discreat as possible.

Right... The military doesn't care, trust me on this one. Enjoy your hobby and the free time your assignment gives you.
