Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Hi I am a newbie to this forum. This is my first post.
I hope someone can help me with a query I have on my safe lock.
I just purchased a used Kumahira 264kg safe with Sargent & Greenleaf 6700 series 3 wheel combo lock. The safe is in good condition and looks to have had very little use. The original combo was 10-20-30 and I have since been able to change it - but I had to use the open index, instead of the change index during the change procedure.
ie. When I followed the change instructions and dialed my existing combination to the change index, I was unable to insert the change key into the back of the lock.
Strangely, the change key DOES insert if I dial the original combo normally to the open index, and I am able to set a new combo in this way, using only the open index as the reference point - I've done this a number of times successfully and the lock seems to work fine.
Can anyone suggest any reasons to why this would be happening?
Why won't the change key go in with the standard procedure?
Is there something wrong with my lock?
Any help is appreciated.
Regards,
ddjac

Don't know how far you're going to get with safe information, that's kept to the advanced forums.
Some things may be pick proof, but everything can be bypassed....

the real question is why does it matter?
look at the position of the change hole on the back of the pack
is located SW on the pack if VU?
it should be eight numbers off

HeadHunterCEO,
Why does it matter? I am a novice and my concern is that something may be wrong with the lock since the change instructions don't work for my lock.
Just want to avoid a lockout down the track and thought there may be a simple reason to why I am able to insert change key using the open index instead.
Yes the change hole is SW and is 8 numbers off the open index.

I recommend calling your local locksmith. They should give you a step by step run through of how to do it.
I don't see how this information is for Advanced Sections. This isn't a bypass method, its just a safe combo change question.

*** I AM NOT A LOCKSMITH OR A SAFEMAN***
This is only my thougts on this matter, and they should be reviewed by someone here who actually is a safeman. You do not want to screw up your safe and have it become a very expensive and heavy coffee table.
Could the combination have been frist set to the opening index by mistake? If so, try adding/subtracting 8 to the combination as needed and dialing to the open index, and thus see if you can use the change key in the change index. Of course, don't lock the safe. At least not until a safe tech says its okay.

So the open index works for both open and change? That's weird... Maybe a moddified back plate?

Yes thats right Towch., the open index works for both open & change.
I'll get a pic of the back of the lock tonight.
Chucklz., I had similar thoughts to you in that the combination may have been first set to the opening index by mistake, and have already played around with adding/subtracting 8 from the combo to see if the change key would align, but it only aligns on the open index. I'll have another play (a careful play) tonight.
David_Parker., I did call my local locksmith who wanted around $120 to come out and check over the lock. They too had similar thoughts to Chucklz. I thought I'd get some advise off here first before I spend more money.

Come on guys... this is an easy one.
You have a zero change index version of the lock. You have the wrong dial faceplate.

Thanks hzatorsk, It had to be simple
Now begs the question why have a change index, surely less change mistakes would happen if all locks could change on the open index. I guess there would be a simple answer for this too.
Thanks all for your help on this one.

Varjeal, Yes I realise I have the wrong dial, I didn't miss the answer.
My closing comment was why do locks have a change index at all?.. surely less change mistakes would happen if all locks could change on the open index.

Because you need that extra part to stop the lever arm dropping in on every revolution whilst changing the combo. It can cause problems.
