Combination Cracking by Sound?

Postby CompositionB » 10 Sep 2005 16:19

I have some American combination locks that I used back in my school days. They have the keyhole in the back for the administrators to open our lockers. I can't remember the combos, but decided to try cracking the locks instead of throwing them away. I got instructions here:
I don't seem to be having any luck and am wondering if these instructions are accurate. I found the manupulation method, but as it was noted to be only for Master locks, I haven't tried it.

TIA for any advice.

Kris

Just to let you know, that page is copywritten by Mr. Hampton and should not be displayed - the mods may delete the link.

As far as your question goes, there is a method to dtermine the position of the wheels in a combo lock, yes. It doensn't rely on sound per se, and the best instruction for this method are on www.crypto.com

Now for your screen name. Composotion B huh? Interesting!

What's it like inside that M-67?

The only use sound serves in manipulation is finding contact points. Feel is much more effective with no aids. The soft drill uses microphones to detect contact points because it's easier than trying to give such a device the ability to do it by feel. This is all beside the point though because the locks you're talking about work completely differently and sound has nothing to do with cracking them. Check out the dudley cracking thread if you're interested in direct fence padlocks, but it's a long read with barely any usefull information. Your best bet is probably to shim them open and then read the wheel pack through the hasp hole.

Oops, I didn't realize that was illegally posted material.

Not stupid at all... Generally, it is Hollywood movie making at it's finest and nothing else.

You can feel what is going on as well as you can hear it. But that doesn't look impressive on film.

Some safe techs do use stethascopes (or inductive amplifiers), but I've never found it to be a necessity (it is rather an aide) if you know what you are doing.
