Pick shapes.

Postby S3rratedSp00L » 20 Jul 2004 19:04

I was recently given an old ABUS No. 41 padlock. It is a laminated padlock that looks like it was the ABUS equivalent of the Master No. 1. After looking at pick pix (pun intended) I saw the Falle progressive hooks. I ground a few rough picks out and found that one of them worked really well on this ABUS padlock. I do believe it has spools or 'shrooms in it since the back 2 pins push the cylinder back before they set. :o My opinion is to make or try every shape you can get your hands on :) I can pick this lock with every pick that I own, but the only shape that works better that that progressive hook for that particular lock would be in the shape of a key  This particular hook seemed to give me better leverage. It just felt better. I could pick the lock in awkward positions easier with it.

The picks that I use the most are just a medium half diamond ground at around a 45 degree angle, maybe a little steeper, and a kinda tall hook for when I need to bust out the big guns and kill those low-high and high-lows  I usually bust out the rakes when I get good at single pin so I don't get bored.. I have pretty good luck raking with a half diamond. half diamonds are pretty versatile in my opinion.. The angles and sizes do make a difference to me!

When you can pick your locks with every pick that you own, then it is time to make some new shapes

I started lockpicking many years ago (with tiny folder knives and paper clips), now that I´ve got a lock pick set (Southord) I mainly use the small hook, next comes the small half diamond, and then all the others.

I would say that most picks are NOT used and some are entirely worthless designs.
.
In my original set of HPC's I think there were about 32 picks. Discounting the broken key remover, I think that many were duplicative... similar picks except with a handle, or in some cases had a profile that I couldn't figure out a use for. The set could have used more different size hook picks... mainly a few smaller ones.

In the end I sold that set and got their Tyro set of 13 picks/wrenches. I use everyone of those, and they're the design basis for the ones I make.

My dream set is a set of laminated handled southords, consisting of all of their hooks, all of their diamonds, a double and single ball, all of these picks in both full sized, and slime line versions. A Peterson reach, a Peterson gem, and a nice leather case for all of them. The hooks are for pin tumblers, the balls are for wafers, and the diamonds are for both.

If I carry a single too, I would always pick a very basic one like a hook, half diamon or half circle, as it will do most simple locks, and can be used for feeling and picking. I have a strange homemade pick that has some features of a hook and half circle, which is also a good single pick set for general use.
