A possible (new) material?

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

A possible (new) material?

Postby recon81 » 17 Sep 2005 5:13

i started reading some of the posts yesterday, and i was wondering to myself what i could use to make a pick set. So this morning i grabbed some 3 1/3 inch nails and filed them down to the width of (maybe slightly bigger than ie. 2 or 3 hairs) a hacksaw blade, hey, it was the only thing i could find.

they fit well into the locks, but i havnt actually tried picking them yet (im getting there, but i need to finish reading up on how to).

I noticed that a lot of the materials used are brittle or fairly malleable, and i was wondering if i was fighting for a lost cause.

So i suppose what im asking is along the line of: Do you think its a good idea to make picks out of steel nails?

There's always the question of what's the best thing to make picks out of. Then there's the question of what you can make picks out of. Can you make a pick out of a steel nail? Possibly. Are there better materials to use? Definitely. I say stick with hacksaw/jigsaw blades. I've always wanted to make a pick set out of a steak knife set. :P

Hehe, gotcha.
i have to say though, its a pretty quick pick if u have the right files. As for the hacksaw blades, ill see what i can do, then compare!
