BS How long?

Does anyone know what the expected time is to open a BS 5 lever mortice lock out in the field?.

Yes I realise it depends on the lock (chubb etc.) condition, and skill of locksmith, but what is the average?

No more than 10 minutes for most, but as a rough guide to an experienced locksmith,

Chubb 110 , 15 to 25 mins
chubb 114 , 4 to 10 mins
ERA , 5 mins
Walsall 5 mins
Union 5 mins
Legge 5 mins
etc etc

for a new guy 10 to 15 mins a lock on average is good, for an experienced guy 5 to 10 mins on most, for someone who teaches it far quicker i would hope, oh yes , and for Al from planet Zarg 2 mins is slow, al is expected to break the 1 min.

but to answer your question any opening using NDE methods in 15 mins or so is wholly acceptable and would be a good job done.

It also depends on the equipment at his disposal, if all he has is two bits of wire (and he is a normal mortal) then he could be there for hours ............

on the other hand is he is well supplied with thousands of pounds worth of picks then it can be much quicker

When Trevor had advanced to Journeyman level with his bits of wire he would say things like 'Had a nightmare with a Legge Yellow today' after discussing various techniques I asked how long it had taken. 'Almost ten minutes'

paul i have to disagree, al does things with 2 wires that us mere mortals cannot, oh to have such success with a £10 tool kit, its us poor mortals that need to spend £££££ to keep up

For the chubb 110 i use 2 different tools, i use the safeventures pin and cam and as long as this fits in the lock i get times of between 7 minutes and 40 minutes on this, i also am starting to use the chris b curtain pick and have achieved times of 25 mins to an hour on these, but also given up and used pin and cam on these, more bench time needed to get consistant with this one.

als apprentice our own mbell has achieved times of 10 mins and under on 110 by hand picking, though he has got the tuition of planet zargs own lock god.
