I am a new lock picker, my intro set of picks is still in the mail, I was just wondering if anyone knew what locks college dorms were most likely to have. The locks in my dorm are deadbolts 10 inches about the door handle. Are they simple 6 pin tumbler locks? Wafer locks? Easy to pick? Haha i get locked out of my room all the time (lost key) and I figured it would be cool if I could get in by picking it. Let me know.
Thanks
George

Without looking at a keyway or a key itself, it would be hard to determine. I have seen Best, Arrow, and ASSA on alot of dorms but without some more information, it would be hard to tell you exactly. It is most likely a Master Key System, so this alone would help you. Post a pic of your key and lock, someone will be able to identify it for you.

Good Lord man, that's not a question that anyone is going to be eager to help you with. How do we know its your door you're picking? We don't and we couldn't. Dorm locks are Masion keyed, at least on the front door, so they're fairly easy to bypass, but I'm telling you, DONT DO IT. Getcher own locks to practice on, and use a little common sense with regards to what you do with your hobby...

Thanks

Let me guess. The sort of person who likes to do something just to see if it is possible, or to prove it is possible, is likely to be keen on Mathematics or Physics (or maybe computer science). Am I correct here? I have seen this before.

I have seen and heard of many instances where people picked locks they didn't own and the master pins came loose or the lock completely quit.
If you were caught trying to pick the door lock even on your own dorm you could be thrown out of your college or university which would not be a good thing at all (stays on record).

Was I right though? You sound like a member of a society I knew about in Cambridge University, UK, called CUBES (Cambridge University Breaking and Entering Society). The name correctly suggests that these were mathematicians. They never took anything, just wanted to prove that they could get in and out of anything and everywhere.

everyone always assumes the worst, and no guy im not a computer science or physics science math guy, im a theology major, if i knew how to delete my post i would, i have no idea what im talking about in terms of picking locks because i never have and now that i know i could destroy a lock in attempting to pick it, im not going to try, i was just curious about it im sure all you badass mofo lockpicking pros are curious about where you could get with your skills
and KJ if that wasnt sarcasm thank you, im no skilled mathematician but the truth is there are secret passageways around here and i figured being able to pick a few easy locks would help out

Sorry we sound harsh, although its a point we often have to drive home. You don't pick locks you dont own. Usually because you could stuff them up quite nicely. You could just buy the same kind of lock of say ebay, and then you could eventually have the skills to pick the same kind of lock. Unless you go to a very small school, or live in a very old building, it is a reasonable bet that you have some kind of interchangeable core locks on your door. You probably dont want to begin learning to pick on an IC lock.
Oh, and about where we "badass mofos" can get into... well once you are skilled enough on a wide variety of locks, you can judge that yourself.

A pin tumbler is a pin tumbler, so in short, yeah, you could get in, provided you weren't interuppted and beat to a bloody pulp by the owner.

I would go to the hardware store and pick up some padlocks. They are cheap, portable, and risk-free. Masterlock #3's are good starters, 140's have security pins once you can do the #3. You can find I-Core padlocks too, but you'll need a special/modified wrench to make picking them feasable.
It's good that people are jumpy about you picking locks that aren't yours, but this site is a great resource, so hang around.

With regards to them being portable, always carry the key with them.
It gives you more credibility if approached by authority.
