Many of my most cherished padlocks have no key. For some strange reason, people who lose their keys don't really think of their padlocks as valuable anymore, and will give them to you for free if you can get them off.

A padlock without a key can be viewed as a weapon, if you're really the unluckiest guy on the block.

padlocks

Postby sivlogkart » 20 Sep 2005 0:26

I also have a lot of padlocks without keys, for the same reason, because people give them too me as they have no value to the owner. In fact, I even ask people for such locks, and now I have a large box full of them.

Curious

Postby sivlogkart » 20 Sep 2005 0:36

If I want to know if in principle I could get in somewhere using my skills, I look at the locks that they have and buy my own of the same type, and pick those, or ask for permission from the owner to try to pick them as a security test.

If the latter, I point out

1) I have never broken a lock by picking it, and would be careful.

2) If I did break a lock in such a demo, I would gladly pay for a new one.

Sometime if you can pick the locks in such a demo, they decided to change the locks, and I ask "Could I have the old ones?" and have added quite a few to my collection this way.

A little piece of advice, I wouldn't go around telling everyone in your dorm that you can pick locks.

If anyone's things go missing, you will become number 1 suspect very quickly. A few instances like that, and the Uni may decide they are better off without you...

Cheers.
Sometimes I beat the lock, sometimes the lock beats me!

If you were being judged for having picks on you,
you could explain that it is a hobby, see, here's my own lock.
When people are thinking negatively towards you,
and you diffuse their insult with reason (the lock), they will
instinctively go for the throat, feeling that you
are not as easy a target to vent their ignorance
on as they had hoped
and still not realising their own stupidity, they will grip
their last resort, cross their fingers you don't have one on you and try to trump:
"So where's the key then?"
At which point, it will be assumed that you stole the lock with the key anyway
because that's what lockpickers do, you know.

I have been picking locks for a few months now. I have told nearly everyone that I talk too. I have not gotten any negative reactions.

If you are getting negative reactions from friends or family, it might be that they already thought you had bad intentions before you took up this hobby. Ask them why they think that you are going to use this skill in an immoral way.

As far as the police are concerned, they are trained to be prepared for the worst. So if they see you with lockpicks, they more than likely will think you are up to no good. It is only if you ARE up to no good that you should worry. If you are not breaking any laws, you will not get in any trouble.

Ok, fair enough. :) It took you two weeks though.
