How do I take Apart Sargent 10 lock?

Postby Riorghbhardan » 16 Dec 2005 20:27

I have a sarget 10 lock that I need help with. I'm actually looking to disable the lock rather than pick it. The lock is no longer necessary and it would really like to have it permanantly unlocked. I'm pretty sure this would involve something like taking apart the door handle and then removing the Talpiece. I'm not sure how to do this though, but I have access to both sides of the door. So if it involves taking the apart the door handle from the locked side or the unlocked side, it doesn't matter. I'm pretty sure this type of lock is a lever lock and that it predates the newer Sargent 10 locks that came out around 2000. If you could help me I'd really appreciate that.

Just remove the lock and then the latch. Refit the lock and the handles without the latch, youll have a hole in the ar of the door but you could fill it with filler and sand and paint as necassary.

Thanx, but How exactly do I remove the handles and which Handle do I remove, the one with the haddle with the lock or the handle without. Also for the same of simplicity, would I be able to disable the lock without removing the cylinder. That way I don't have to worry about filler and their isn't a whole in the handle. I've really never done anything like this.

Ok i may be telling wrong here but i was meaning the latch that is on the edge of the door.

To remove the handle i was assuming you had one side (the inside) that had screws holding it on.

I think you should wait for someone who knows what their talknig about to come on and answer,

Sorry for confuseing things.

Thats another thing, I have access to both sides of the door. But I'm a little new on the lingo so which side is considered the Inside and which side is considered the Outside? Because I never really understood that.

If there is a key hole on one side that would be the outside,

I think we need some pictures here. It is going to be hard to explain it to a newbie when we can't see what we are dealing with. There are different ways to take off different locksets. Typically to remove a handle, there is a retaining pin or a hole on the inside handle that you can either unscrew or depress. If it is a retaining pin, unscrew it and remove the handle, from there you can remove the screws that are holding it to the door. if it is a button, you will see just a small hole on the stem of the handle, push a paperclip into it and pull the handle away from the door, completeing the task by removing the screws holding it to the door. Again, get some pictures. If it is a morticed lockset, it requires a different procedure
