best access control to fit a upvc door

Postby gee252 » 30 Dec 2005 9:24

I need to fit some kind of access control to an old lady's door the trouble is it's a uvpc door.
what it is to save her getting up to unlock it she has been leaving it unlocked so family etc can get in but the other day her son came the door was unlocked and when he went in his mum was asleep now you can understand is concerns this day and age.
He is my boss and has asked me to come up with something like a swipe card or remote keyfob system so the door is locked all the time and then the old lady can let people in(she has already got cctv to cover the door)or family can gain entry easily.
been looking about but it seems to me most systems are to fit wood doors, any help would be appreciated thanks.
lock picking! i luv it

How about fitting a supra keysafe somewhere near by ? Ive fitted a few of these for this purpose for health vistors etc. The combo is easily changed to if need be.

I think codelocks make a handle to fit upvc doors that has a digital pad, they do a few different options for your problem.

if he wants a remote keyfob system, try central lock from mila, expensive but a superb fully tested system, central locking for the home

Do these open up if you blow smoke through the letter box? or at least hold a smouldering taper through there.

these only open up from the inside and not from the outside in event of considerable smoke from a house fire.
A taper doesnt quite do it, but it only opens doors from inside, so a decent letterbox protector prevents dropping on handle so eliminates this weakness

they are expensive, the most basic system requires following

1 x front door lock @ £175 plus vat
1 x smoke detector unit @ £120 plus vat
2 x fobs at £60

so the most basic system comes in at £355 plus vat for front door only, add ons are;

back door and additional door locks £150 plus vat
window locks at £80 plus vat
Dialer TBA

the dialer is cool, allowing you to call your house from anywhere in world and open the door via pin number.

Expensive, but quality and fully guaranteed, you can only stock it and obtain parts for it , if you attend their free 1 day course on installing it, they will only train 3 per area.

the 1 day free course is held at Mila in daventry, yes i fit these, a typical 2 door 4 window fit takes about 2 hours.

Thanks for the other suggestions guys thought about code lock handle and the key safe but could be a bit fiddley for the old lady i was thinking either remote keyfob or swipe card but with the remote system she can unlock the door from her chair.
there doesn't seem much on the market at the moment for upvc so mila seem to have this sorted.
