First Lock! Master Combination Keyhole.

Postby BobbypinsPlease » 2 Aug 2005 8:07

Hope I'm not asking about something covered in an old thread. Did a search but couldn't find anything.

Okay so I'm working on my first lock. It's just a basic Master combo lock that I found abandoned on my buildings bike rack. What I'm trying to do is pick the itty bitty keyhole on the back. I've managed to set at least 2 pins, but after that I can't find anymore. So, my question is how many pins am I looking for here? And, will this even open the lock up?

Thanks for any help.

Wow, please excuse the stupid noob question. Just raked the pins and heard 4 clicks. However, if anyone has experience with this type of lock any tips would still be welcome.

Even though you alread have this lock and are working on it. I still recommend an easier lock to start out with. i.e. Kwikset dead bolt. but to answer you question. I would have to go with really light tension, especially because its a small keyway.

I recently posted about an american combo lock with a small keyhole in the back. I got it open with a sawtooth rake. I put a little tension on it while I jiggled/raked it. It was enough to open it pretty fast.

Keep on trying. You'll get it eventually.

I got this lock pretty easily but its kinda confusing at first.

First i used a snake pick and i picked it and it opened in a Clockwise rotation.

I apply really light tension and jiggled the shackle part or that part that comes up and down as i lightly scrubbed the tips of the pins. It should open much easier this way cus the scrubbing and the jiggling for some reason opened most masters in seconds.

I hope this helps u

What direction are you trying the tension (clockwise or counter)? When I got my first set of picks, I want to say that it was counter when I tried on the same kind of lock but I might be wrong. Master Lock Co. put that key hole there so school administrators could easily get into unsuspecting kids lockers. Ill see if I can dig up one of my old ones and I will confirm.

P.S. No question is stupid unless meant to be.....

Master combo lock I had used a 5 pin lock in the back. Have the split cylinder sitting here, it's pretty low tolerance garbage.

Had to modify one of my spare tension wrenches to pick it, but afterward it wasn't too difficult; really thin hook pick and some patience will get 'em.

If I can recall correctly they're 4-pins. BTW, alot of times those dual combo/key locks are sold in bulk having a master key to them, for schools, warehouses, hospitals and such. Back when I was in school they made every student get one, and all had the same serial code stamped on the back so they could have a master key to access all the lockers. With that in mind, I took my lock home and made a key for the lock (you can take a normal house key, flip it upside down, and file it to make a key blank for that lock) Then everytime I had to get in my locker, instead of spending a min with the combo, I could open it up in a snap. If I get my hands on another one, I'll post a DIY on it.
