Ilco SFIC (BEST, etc.) FM blank -- what it fits

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Postby Chucklz » 2 Mar 2006 21:55

The diagram lists those keyways as ones that are passed. I have locks with most of those keyways, including some that are in doubt. Someone mail me a few blanks... oh yeah and one cut to all 9s

If you're a bit enterprising, they have FMs here: http://www.iccores.com/

Yep, they're good people over there. I've dealt with them before.

I'd be willing to try

Postby bprzybyl » 4 Mar 2006 16:23

If someone would sell me/tell me where to buy FM blanks, I'd be willing to try them out in my cores. I've got:
E, G, M, R

I should have more on monday.

Just so anyone who read this knows, I was not completely oblivious, I did see that post. I was gonna ask, and apparently should have, do they sell only to lockie's? Because a lockie I am not.

Oh yeah, and does anyone know if the catalog is free?

Thanks.

Think they sell to anyone. I contacted them and they have FMs in stock for 50 cents each.

Got some.

Postby bprzybyl » 22 Mar 2006 1:06

I got some blanks off eBay. Here's what they fit of the cores I have-

A:bit of a tight fit, but might be because it's not cut at all

D(I think): Fits well

F: Fits fine

M: No fit

R: Fits really well

If anyone can find a better place than I've been using to identify cores, I'd be happy to get more confirmed keyway ID's.

I've gotten my keyways off here:

Thanks,
Brooks

Oh yeah, and the catalog hasn't come yet :( and I was so exited.

I just got some Ilco BEST FM blanks. It fits G keyway like it should, but it is quite a bit thinner to accomodate so many keyways, so durability is questionable if it will be used as a bump key or any other purpose that stresses the key a lot.

I know its been a while since you posted, but I've come to conclusion that not all "FM" blanks are made the same and I do not know who makes them correctly, if there is such thing as "correct".

I think everyone's post is correct for the specific blank core combination they have.

A1114FM Ilco's response to someone's inquiry:
B,C,D,E,F,G,H, NOT A,J,K,L,M, DD

grit1's JMA FM: A,DD,F,E, NOT H, B

Mine:
Star: D,G NOT F(unless you REALLY force it)
Image
Unknown make: D,G,E,F(goes in silk smooth)
Image

Left=Star, right = unknown make
Image
Measurements are clearly different
Star
top part, edge to edge .071'
groove depth .020"

Unk.
top part, edge to edge .062'
groove depth .020"

Almost hundredth of an inch of extra thickness is probably enough to cause it to bind in an F keyway.

Perhaps it's just a matter of tolerances.

Would judiciously sanding/filing [pick any candidate] be enough to let it fit most of the keyways mentioned, do you think?

True, but it would be nice to know what the true FM specification is.

Given that Ilco themselves are reduced to figuring it out empiracally, I'm not sure if that's going to happen; it seems like a nonexistent ideal anyway. Sort of moot since nobody seems to use these... strength reasons, I assume?
