Hi,

Just discovered all this in the last 10 minutes, but it loks great! I'm in Birmingham, UK, and wanted to know the best way to start picking - do I just buy a set of tools off eBay and go down to B&Q and buy a lock?
I don't want to spend loads to start with, as I have other hobbies!

Thanks,
George

Ebay shouldnt have any tools on, its agaisnt their policy, dont buy anything off there tool or cd wise all you want to know is here, welcome.

If you look around you can find many many threads on making home made tools most are from hacksaw blades o the only other thing you would need is a dremel or somthing.

A commercial set may be around the £15 mark but look around here first and dont go to a magic shop as they will rip you off.

Practice locks can be got from anywhere, junk shops, local lockies, B+Q, but ebay is your cheapest bet, one member has recently got a bag full of euro cylinders for less than the postage cost lol

Have a good read around, book mark the site so you dont loose it for next time and we will drag you in kicking and screeming whether you like it or not, lockpicking is addictive :P

Oh and dont do locks you dont own or rely on but i guess youve already decided that

Thanks Shrub!

I'd like to make my own - I want to do this on the cheap, if possible!

The site's already been bookmarked, I just don't know what my parent's are going to think  - I don't want to break into people's houses!

 That subject has also been covered very well, i think you should be honest, tell them what your up to, explain why and show them this site and how we treat crims, that should put their mind at rest.

Thanks Shrub - I had a chat with my mum and she doesn't see the point, so I guess I can go pick some locks!

I'm thinking of the getting a pack of tools form Devon Locks (the cheapest one) and just have a go - do they need to be the narrow ones?

Thanks,
George

For UK members Devon Locks is probably the best place to buy picks from.
You might find cheaper picks advertised but they tend to charge more for P&P.

I finally purchased a small set from them.
Even though I had selected First Class Recorded delivery, they arrived the next day. :P (Respect to Devon Locks and the Royal Mail posse)

The slim line lock picks are best for UK locks.

My local shop sells 4 pin padlocks for £1.99, which are great for learning on.

The small south ord set will be fine and yes the slim line set is the one to go for, basically everything mouse said.
