Hey all,

Great site!

I've recently developed an interest in lock picking and I am looking to get my first set of tools next week.

I have a few questions

I tried my first lock today; a yale padlock and I got very excited when I picked it 3 times in 10 mins with just 2 thin bits of metal which I snapped off something I found in the shed. I used 1 for the tension and picked with the other. I was just poking and prodding so it's no great achievement, I know - but it still felt good.

Anyhow, after getting all excited (sad, I know lol) - I kept trying... after that 3rd time I have not been able to get it open since. I know I should wait for the tools but I just had to have a go.

My questions are:

I dont really understand the binding pin is, what is it and what does it do? how do you know if you have found it? and do you need to find the binding pin before setting the rest?

I have included a photo of the lock just so you guys know what I'm working with.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Also posted same message in another forum hope thats not against the rules.

The MIT guide could be considered the bible of lockpicking enthusiasts.

This second may be just as important because there are more pic's.

Hey Clayton1123,

Thanks alot I do actually have the MIT guide given to me by another member of this site, I'm busy reading it at the min lol.

Thanks for the link to the other guide will give it a look tonight.

Just so you all know I'm not doing this to try get into that padlock or any other lock for any other reason then it interests me and I get a buzz out of getting it open, The padlock in the picture was just one I found in the shed and had no keys so thought why not have a go.

At the present I have have opened 3 padlocks and 1 door lock but at the moment I must admit its 90% luck.

Bit more practice and studying of this site and hopefully I'll get skilled at it.

Thanks for your help

Here is one of the customary warnings.....

Don't pick a lock that you rely on (e.g. your front door), because you may damage it.

But good luck with the picking....

Hey Pizarro,

Yeah the door lock I've been using is just some cheap lock I got from a bootsale.

Its scary how easy it is to pick I can open it everytime with 10-20 secs and I still don't really know what I'm doing lol.

Guess you get what you pay for but they should be harder then that to get into .
