Battery Picks

Postby extreem » 8 Apr 2006 18:37

Hi all, im a new member here and have taken to the bizz of picking my first lock with the help from a friend at work who showed me how to to do a simple old padlock, and I was well chuffed with myself that I opened one :D another lad went out and bought a battery powered lock pick and passed it round work but it didn't work, 8 people tryed it, no joy he paid £100 for it, I take it you have to know how to use it and not just press the button?

indeed, a little know how never hurt anything. Is it one of those vibrating picks, or a snap gun? Welcome to the community and read this to help you out with your new hobby.

Thank you for your reply, its the vib pick not the gun one. we have an old lock that i can pick in 15 seconds (pick pickset) but with the vib pick I cannot open it.

It also depends on the lock.

I have the Southord electric vibrating pick (the version they sold about 10 years ago), and I don't have many successes with it.

Obviously, I want to hit all the pins with it at once, so that the top pins 'fly away' and create a wide shear line.

But in most locks, I don't find a position where the pickgun needle can hit the pins properly, there are too many wards in the keyways :(

Also, applying proper torque is very difficult. In theory, you don't want tension while the needle hits the pins, so that they can 'fly away' properly. The torque is only required while the shear line is present...
So a really light torque is appropriate, yet difficult to achieve...

You might want to try the needles from Wendt, or polishing your needles so that they are much thinner.
