Hook Or Diamond

Do you prefer a hook or diamond to use when opening pin-tumblers?

Man, these newfangled poll thingies -- I just accidentally voted for diamond, and I was trying to vote for hook. Sorry, just woke up.

Of course, like Chuck, my favorite pick is a DeForest. I consider it a diamond-tipped hook more than an elevated diamond, which is why I was TRYING to vote for hook.

LOL. I'll have to look into that pick, is it difficult for a beginner to learn on? I'm not gonna vote yet cause I don't have my picks yet.. soon, I must train myself now for picking locks by excercising paitience. :D

If the pickset you purchased has a "full hook" you can grind it down to such a shape, by using your half hook as a guide.

Ehh, depends. If the key way is pretty restricted, a hook is to big to use. Then a half diamond comes into play. If you have some room to work, a hook is nice to really feel each pin

I've never found a keyway that is too restricted for one of my hooks, and I've picked alot of locks. Some keyways require thinner hooks, or hooks with varying curvature, but I have yet to find a lock that I cant use a hook on, although I have yet to attempt the Best Patented Paracentric Keyway (Say that 10 times fast).

I use to use the diamond the most but now I find I have more success with the half hook.

Hooks works great for me when im picking something with a large forgiving keyway like a kwikset. The diamond works when im trying to rake a standard pin tumbler. I have become fond of the diamond when picking a schlage lock, especially the grade 2 deadbolts with the spool tumblers.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

With the exception of the DeForest and the gem (a hook with a diamond on top of it, but is still more like a hook) I think the half daimond is worthless. Just my 2 cents.

Yeah, it's because you're new. Kwikset locks are actually pretty darn easy to maneuver in. If you stick to it, you'll run into a lot of keyways that'll have you ready to chew the lock off the door.
