The whole thing was made using a Dremmel and some sheets of wet&dry sandpaper. Took about 5 hours in total to do, but I really wasn't sure where I had to cut.
When I did finish the cut-away it looked like crap, but a fair amount of time spent with the wet&dry smoothed out the 'death-scars' that the Dremel had left.

I managed to expose the sidebar, yet leave enough metal on each side to keep it securely in place. Oh yeah, and the lock was silver colored before, but I had to sand away so much it ended up exposing the brass under it.
