Spring-loaded lock disassembly

Postby krazy k » 13 Jul 2006 19:24

Hi all. I'm a new member here, and I started the craft of lock picking not too long ago. My friend and I took apart a deadbolt just to see every little detail in it (and modified quantity of driver pins), and now we are curious to disassemble a spring-loaded lock. After taking it off the door, I have no clue as to where to go any further in an attempt to get to the cylinder...the construction is a little different than a deadbolt. If anybody has any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

We're gonna need pics, or at a BARE minimum a brand name for the lock.

is this to say you took this lock off of your own door? like a front door? if so i suggest NOT putting it BACK ON just buy a new lock, if this is the case, then you should know two things:

1) DO NOT PICK LOCKS YOU RELY ON.
2) DO NOT MESS WITH LOCKS YOU RELY ON.

these are very important, especially if you're a n00b (which you are) now picking WILL NOT ruin a lock, but many times n00bs can and will (i did once) do something that isnt supposed to happen while normally using a lock (such as the key is supposed to hold the pins in place, a pick doesnt) and something goes wrong.

eg: pinstacks get stuck and you have to disassemble the entire lock to fix it, or springs fly out and are lost, ruining the lock.

so dont use locks you rely upon...thats important.

if you arent using a lock you rely on, then sorry for the harsh tone there, many (if not all n00bs) need to be told this bit of info before something bad happens.

as for disassembly of the lock, NONE of us can help ya without pics or brand/model. (pics are WAY better.)

This might help: http://www.kwikset.com/Trade/Literature ... Manual.pdf
(I found that because Raccoon mentioned it somewhere - thanks!

Hey, how do I add a picture to my post? I have some pictures of the lock, but I don't know how to add them...if someone could tell me how, that would be great. Thanks.

P.S. This lock is not off my door, it's a used lock.

Ok, I have an image of the lock (I have 2 more if this one is not enough). There is no brand name written on the lock, but to me it looks like either a Weiser or a Kwikset. By the way, thanks for the guide "mh," I was able to remove the spindle with it's help, but I'm stuck past that. Anyways, here's a pic. Thanks guys (thanks for quick tip digital_blue).

That type of cylinder is called a "Key In Knob" (which you'll often see abbreviated to KIK)... a search for that will lead you to a number of posts. As well, page 16 of the following guide shows how to properly strip down a Kwikset knob, which looks to be similar to what you have:

Thanks for your help guys. Although I have to say that the guide sucked at explain stuff, it gave me ideas on how to take it apart. I finally ended up figuring it out on my own and I just took it apart. Thanks for your time everyone.

I'd strongly recommend you don't take the actual lock bit apart until you have found yourself a clear plastic bag with no holes in it to ensure the springs can't get away. Saves a lot of heartbreak.

Oh I know what you mean. But this isn't a lock I rely on though, so I really don't care if I lose some springs/drivers/pins.

You will when you put it back together and it jams solid.

Well, after taking it out a couple of times, it did jam, but my friend and I just broke the spring and put it back together...we're gonna buy a whole bunch of springs and drivers tomorrow.
