pin kits

the universal pinning kits are expensive. would it be better to buy the pins separate. it seams like you would get more pins to that way.

You could always craft your own kit- I think even an empty kit can be a bit expensive if you can find one for sale.

I imagine that this could work out for you- find the pin sizes nearest the sizes common locks need- and purchase the sizes directly around it, and build up.

You might even be able to find a similar container (with many little spaces) that you can use

Every time you get an old lock or have to change one you can strip it for spares, the plug, the housing, the springs, the pins, the tail, the clips etc can all be put in separate pots labelled up from the lock type they are from,

If its a common lock and your getting loads of them its pointless stacking them up, find the best 1 or 2 to play with then strip the others for spares, it makes money in the long run,

yea they are common locks. i wanted to start pinning them different and with security pins. so your saying just get a couple different size packs of pins and use the old one's with them. see i priced the universal kit's and some are more than a hundred dollars. i wanted to make sure i bought the right pins for the right locks that's why i wanted those little pin size charts. like I'm not sure how many different spring sizes there are and so on. i downloaded a mac chart and i just wanted to get going. i understand the advice your giving me i think :) don't jump the gun and spend the money on something I'm not going to use. :)

thanks

If you want to start cheap, try picking up a Schlage kit amd pin all your locks to schlage depths. It would be important to have a meathod of cutting keys to factory spacing and the use Sclage depths.

most of my locks are schlage and kwikset besides a few other brands. i want to pin my schlage's up as hard as i can make them. i would do it to the kwikset's but the key ways are to large. i know everyone asks this question but what would you guys get next. i got a few medecos with a lot of key blanks for cheap from ebay but I'm not ready for those yet. i was thinking pin the schlage's up hard and maybe get Sargent or Corbin next. I've had s.w.b.s. the last month and need to shake it. i need to start picking more.

Determine the types of locks you wish to repin, and the types of pins you wish to put in them.

I bought a nice (in my opinion) pinning kit on eBay. It's a Kwikset "Society Brass Collection - Keying Station Pin Kit No. 266" and I paid about $53 shipped. Here's a link to a current ebay auction for the same kit.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0010189036

The pinning kit covers Kwikset, Schlage, Weiser, Master, and Weslock. There are 23 key-pins, and 0.160" driver pins in standard and security spool. All pins are color coded using (as far as I can tell) LAB's coloring system.

I was mistaken in a previous post about this kit. The key pins are pointed or "bullet" shaped with a flat driver-side end. The driver pins are completely flat on both ends. I had previously stated that they were flat and beveled on both ends, but they are not. These are quality pins and offer tight tolerances.

I will note, however, that some really crappy kwikset locks I've used these in would have benefited from pins with beveled ends for loose tolerances. I have had to use a pin larger or smaller than the proper pin to achieve smooth key operation. The pins are on average 0.004" to 0.009" apart, as they are for specific locksets-- so it's not a truly universal kit but you CAN get by with most locks you encounter.

If you intend to do high volume repining of a specific brand of lock, for an apartment complex or such, I would also suggest you buy bulk pins for that specific brand. You get about 50~55 pins per size in this kit, so it would be wise to buy packs of pins for large jobs and keep this set for general work.

The kit also comes with springs, pin spring covers (clip and slide), 2 sizes C of clips, and a plug follower. You will want to buy a pair of tweezers and a C clip remover.

This is an excellent kit, A++++. :D

Oh! And email this seller about factory cut change keys. He'll sell you pairs of keys ready for repinning for $1 a set.

I have a couple of medicine dispenser containers that have seven compartments apiece. just enough to hold 20 or so pins apiece

they are compact ,stackable and take up little room in my toolbag for quick jobs where i don't won't to go back to the truck to pin up a lock

i built an arrow repin kit in this manner
