Slim line vs Standard?

Postby Fifth_Man » 25 Aug 2006 23:24

Hi all, in the process of putting together my first set. I was going to go ahead and buy the standard 14 piece set and then upon further reading I notice the slimline vs standard debate, so I began searching for a good 45 minutes on the search function for a related topic but failed. So...

Slimline or Standard? I mean I understand both would be good to have, but as a basic set for a beginner what is recommended?

First of all, take a look at THIS..

And now - fill out your profile, so we would know where you live. That would help us to help you make the choice.

The most basic fact of the matter is - if you live in Europe - get a slimline set. If you reside in the States, go for the standard set. Some European locks tend to have less accessible keyways...

If you get a normal set, you still will be able to pick the vast majority of the European locks, but every once in a while you will stumble upon the slimmer ones...

Obviously, as the slimline picks are slimmer, they're more prone to bending...

What I would advise is to try to make a few picks on your own, get the feel, get some practise, and then order a set. Otherwise, you might quickly ruin your commercial picks...

Dahh... anyway, it's 6.00 a.m. over here, so I should probably start getting ready for bed....

Cheers,
Norbert.

you live in north carolina? ok heres what you do:

go for the 14 pc set (from southord?) and then add on like 2 or maybe 3 slimline picks. thats what i did. and you know what? it works really great, i have a noce assortment of regular picks, and then 2 slimmies for when things get tight. its great. and it only costs me like 3.50 or something for the 2 slims.

do that and i think you will be set for learning the hobby.

Honestly, the slimmer your picks the better they'll negociate wards in any keyway. Go with the slimlines from the get go. This will also force you to go easy on your picks unless you want them to break.

Ok...so that's two for standard one for slimline....still no immediate tie breaker.....

I read something about sanding them down, any pro's or con's to that which could settle a slimline vs standard debate?

Both styles are acceptable however, with slimline picks, you need to be alot more light handed because they are prone to breakage more easily...

It is all personal choice....I have used aluminium picks and stainless steel and spring steel...

I personally prefer the HPC variety....but i believe the Peterson are of reasonable quality too.

southord is a good beginner brand. you can probably bend those in half almost before they actually break.

As SFGOON has mentioned starting out with the slimline/Euro versions will force you to be light-handed or replace picks constantly. The faster you get used to using picks gently the better off you will be.
