Stepping up to Sidebar locks - Which one?

Postby TAMUmpower » 26 Aug 2006 23:00

Just like the title says. I'm done with security pins and want a sidebar to tackle. Any lock brand or model recommendations.....Medeco, ASSA, BEST?

Ultimatly I am working towards Biaxial Medicos, so I figure I need to start mastering sidebars.

if you are working twoards Medeco Biaxials, why not start with them.

remove all but 1 of the pins and get consitant, the move to 2 pins and so on.

Start with a non-biaxial Medeco without false notches on the sidebar axis if you want to pick a Medeco.

I'm not sure about the model numbers, but you can always look for the biaxial logo if you're in doubt.

I've got a Medeco electric switch lock with 3 pins and it's biaxial (aka sidebar). They do have ribs on the pins but aren't too severe. Don't confuse these with the regular cam locks, I think most of those are non-sidebar. The way I tell is to look at the keyway, the highly warded locks seem to all be biaxial while the more normal keyway is just a normal pin tumbler (But I could be off my rocker here). I have only spent a short time on mine so far with no results, once I make a tool to properly twist the pins I'll start getting serious again.

After looking closer they claim these have 5 pins so it would appear that there are several versions floating around in the wild. Mine are from an IBM RS/6000 cover lock (The older Microchannel systems).

Mine where 10-15 year old unopened stock that I found in my junk room :). I had them for years and didn't know they where anything special until I found them again a few months ago.

Medeco's seem to be reasonably priced on ebay and they seem to pop-up on odd-ball equipment that sells for much less than just a bare Medeco lock. The 4-pin Medeco payphone lock that I posted pictures of was about $15. (It apprears they just removed that post for some reason).
