Rotating Pins and Sidebars

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Rotating Pins and Sidebars

Postby blueduck » 9 Sep 2006 2:35

I was reading about the medeco high security padlocks, and they claim to have a "unique elevating and rotating tumbler pin system". I don't believe that I will be able to open one of these any time soon (not that I can spend $90 on a lock anyways  ), but I'm curious on what this "elevating and rotating" pin is. Like, how do pins "rotate"??

I've tried to look up info on what this means, but I havent found anything about "rotating" pins

Would someone be so kind as to explain this theory?

Also, as a side note, what's a sidebar, and what's it supposed to do?

The pins are rotated by angled cuts on the key, as said explanation on these locks with picking details arent for public consumption, its a suppriseing 1st post but welcome to the site,

there are some pictures of biaxial pins near the end of that thread. just seeing the pins makes it a bit clearer how the lock might work.

go to your biggest local locksmiths and look around for all the glossy literature on medeco, theres some high end mechanical drawings that will help you.

Thanks for the replies. The pics in the biaxial thread were helpful and I found a lot of helpful diagrams from the "Lock Breakdown Diagram" sticky.
