Cutting Medeco Biaxial Keys

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Cutting Medeco Biaxial Keys

Postby Raccoon » 2 Oct 2006 14:12

Are there special gauging or alignment tools for determining cut angles in a medeco key so to calibrate the angle of the cutting wheel to cut angular bittings that match?

How are angles communicated through a code list?

I remember hearing that the angles and hights are measured and they are entered into a sophisticated computer controlled cutting machine
If all fails, use nitroglycerine.

I have a manual dial-driven "sophisticated" cutting machine. I can angle the cutting wheel, but I'd like to know how to measure cut angles from existing keys, and from key charts, and what tools are used for proper alignment.

I guess I really don't understand your question. All you need is the space and depth info with the rotation codes.

For visual decoding of the key hold it in your left hand looking at the bitting surface facing you. Angles will be straight across, left, or right

For biaxial, you can break the cuts down into fore and aft cuts and center cuts.

The table would looks similar to this I think if I remember the letter designations correctly:

Code: Select all

            Fore Cuts
          K     B     Q
Left      L     C     R     Right
          M     D     S
             Aft Cuts

Medeco cuts are .170" center to center on the cuts with a fore cut being .031" before the centerline and and aft cut being .031" after the centerline.

Hope that atleast answers some of your questions.

I believe he is using the Ilco universal which is the same machine pretty much as the hpc biltz.

I haven't used an Ilco universal, I do have 2 Ilco disk type code machines. I'm sure that as long as he has the proper info and cutter there should be no problem
