help iding a lock?

Postby unjust » 10 Nov 2006 16:08

so i've got the little locker w/o a key. locker is minimum 30 years old, possibly up to 80.

the lock is a small yale, that i'm guessing is a curtain lock? i'm not finding it on their website.

the key is flat with ~6 stepped contact points near the end and a notched tip that fits into the small bushing on the back of the lock to center the key.

writing on the back is a 3 digit hex code followed by a 3 digit number, the number is repeated on the face of the keyway.

from examining other locks, the hex code is the master key code, and the numbers are the key id.

coin in images is a US quarter for scale.

the keyway rotates from 6 ~ 1 oclock w/o impedement where at least 1 ramp starts to intrude where the business side of the key would be (on the outside of the keyway.

i have permission to attempt to generate a key for this lock, i'm just wondering a bit mroe about it's insides so that i know more of what i'm up against.

i'm thinking, that to impression this lock, i pick it, and while 1/2 open, remove the picks, feed it a blank, which i then file as appropreiate, based on where the levers sit on the key.

that right?

The URL's for your images don't seem to be accessible to me. It complains about a yahoo host that can't be reached.

If it is a lever lock it will be impression similarly to a standard pin tumbler lock. The binding lever will mark until it is either in a false notch or the true gate then another lever will mark. Eventually you will work through all levers and any levers set in false notches will start marking again.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!
