Spool pins and Security Pins how to for noobs by a noob

Postby jspencer » 26 Nov 2006 10:53

OK,
I have seen several posts by people like me who are new to lockpicking and have been easily opening the kwikset locks we buy, cus' they are cheap, and were stopped in our tracks when we tried to open a lock with security pins in them. In my case, I bought some locks from the habitat store and couldn't open half of them.

The signs are all the same.

I can't seem to find the right order
The pins all feel set, but the lock won't turn
When I lift the pin, I feel pushback on the tentioner
The lock seems to "over-rotate" when I set a certin pin
My lock was damaged when I threw it through my window and ran it over with my car.

Searching through the posts, the advice is always the same also.

SPP the spools or security pins first
Let back slightly on the tentioner and push the pin up to the sheer line
Finding the right order is almost trial and error
Put you lock back together and replace your window.

I have created a flash that demonstrates what is going on with these pins. Being as I am new to both flash and locks, feel free to comment if I got somthing wrong. (be gentle about my flash skills  )

All it does it send me back to this page but in a new window,

From your explanation it may be that you have it slightly wrong, you cant pick the spools first if they arent first, when you go to picking the order of pins the set spools will fall down,

Also what happens if the lock is full of spools?

The way to pick spools is to pick the lock as normal and then if the plug turns a lot but then jams this means youve falsely set one or more spools,

You then lighten up on the tension and work under each pin indivbidually and lift them up, a falsely set spool pin when lifted will make the plug turn back slightly, once youve found the wrong pins you lighten up the tension and try pushing those pins higher without unsetting the correct ones,

If they all fall no worries, reset the lock and start again only this time lif tht epins you know to be spools a lot higher than last time when its their time to be set,

I don't know why the link takes you back. It did the same to me. If you copy and paste it into your address bar, it will take you to the flash movie though.

As for the other stuff. Thank you for the info. This is the kind of information I was not able to find when I was searching.

It might be take you back because that's what it's supposed to do. This could be a malicious flash file. I'm sure it's that it is hard for a lot of people here to grasp but flash can execute javascript and javascript can be used to retrieve and edit cookie (like your auto login cookies which sometimes contain password hashes) and even session cookie info. I'm not trying to accuse you of anything. I just think its better to be safe than sorry. For now... I would suggest that the link be removed by a moderator and anyone who has an account with authority that has clicked the link change their password. Or maybe I'm completely wrong. That's my two bits.

Well for 1) Its not malicious, I couldn't think of any possible reason someone would go to the trouble of making an imformative and reasonably accurate tutorial (letting off tension, for me anyway, whilst trying to pick a spool pin, resulted in not being able to set it properly without loosing previously set pins...perhaps change the statement 'and that will open the lock' ;) ) would be out to infect our systems...

....and for 2) Its extremely hard to decode password hashes from session cookies, and would only be reserved for serious malicious attacks on the right people, not random like we are on a forum like this....it wouldn't be worth his hastle.

and for 3) freewebs doesn't like direct linking to files from other sites. when you click on the .swf link freewebs sees the referer as this page, and rejects the request and forwards you back to the referring page. thats why it works if you copy and paste the link into your address bar, no click link=no referring page. no referring page freewebs has no reason to not let you download the file.

Ya, 80px high, my friend. I had the same problem when I first joined.

Also, Melvin, good on ya ;)

If it's of consolation to anyone, I've been putting my foot in my mouth with my girlfriend on a regular basis lately.
