question from newbie

Postby seejohnrun » 15 Jan 2007 14:51

i've been trying to pick little locks around my house to get used to it, and on doors i continually can get the plug to spin freely but can't open the door.

i have a feeling that there's something like in a bathroom door lock that i need to do in order to turn the knob on the other side.

any help would be amazing. thanks!

Sounds like you are picking to the locked direction. Try applying tension in the opposite direction you are doing currently. That should solve your problem.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

Funny ive heard this many times, but even after hearing it i dont take it seriously, and i dont think many others do either. Yeah it does wear down the lock pins but its so hard to resist doing. The temptation is just to strong to try it.

there are alot of other problems that can arise other then pins wearing down ... like turing the plug too far.... don't do it unless you have the money to replace what ever it is you're messing with

yeah. seriously. search around at some of the panicky posts from newer users that locked themselves out or ruined their front door because they wanted to pick their way in. it is actually quite funny at first. then it gets sad, because the person is stuck, and they wouldnt be if they had heeded our warnings.

that being said, if you really know what you're doing, and you KNOW you can fix your door without any problems regardless of anything that could happen, then you are free to pick your own locks all you want. but usually new users dont have the knowledge to fix it if they break it.
