Class Syllabus for Fox Valley Technical College Locksmithing

Postby dragonriot » 29 Jan 2007 12:55

Thought you guys in Wisconsin might be interested to know what the Fox Valley Tech College is actually offering. The only problem is that the class is only held once a year... in October. It takes one week to complete the class, so not only are you spending ~$1000 for the class but you also need to take off of work for a week. I was thinking if we got enough guys interested in taking the class some time in spring, the school might hold another class for us. I would guess it would be worth it for the school if 10 of us were to enroll in the class. Here's the info that I got from their website.

Are you looking for a career change? Do you enjoy working with your hands? Do you enjoy problem solving? Are you a working adult or new high school/GED graduate? Do you have a week of vacation to learn a new vocation? Do you have the flexibility to move to a new geographic area? If you answered yes...
This career training opportunity is for you!

This training course is conducted in partnership with the Associated Locksmiths of America (ALOA). Graduates are awarded the Registered Locksmith (RL) designation through ALOA.

The six-day hands-on training course is designed to train a completely inexperienced person for entry-level employment in the field of locksmithing. This is a security related growth field offering many employment opportunities. Students are encouraged to research their local yellow pages and contact their local retail locksmiths to determine potential employment in the area. Additional employment opportunities can be found in larger institutional locksmith shops such as schools, hospitals, factories, and corporate office complexes.

Professional experienced locksmith educators will instruct the class. All student materials and course supplies are included. The student will learn how to:

* Identify and duplicate keys
* Service pin and disc cylinders
* Read key codes
* Master key basic systems
* Impression keys
* Service and install locksets
* Identify and install cabinet, furniture, and mailbox locks
* Identify and install exit hardware and door closers
* Incorporate life safety codes into lock designs
* Open locks with picks

Dates Offered: October 8 - 13, 2007
Course Tuition:

$995 (Course subject to enrollment minimums/maximums).
Tuition must be paid in advance to ensure a seat in the class.
Tuition due date: September 6, 2007
Cancellation fee: $100 cancellation fee after September 06, 2007
Registration:

Sorted your post out :wink:

On looking at the course in my opinion you would not be spending your money wisely, its a lot of money for what you can print off from here in less than half a day, if looking for a course you need somthign thats gogint o actually teach you somthing that cant be learnt from the back of any lock box of internet site, picking and serviceing locks is one of the most important and once the knowledge is there its merely practice,

Learn the content from this site and search out a course that would then further your knowledge,

But thats only my opinion from what ive read on your post and have no personal experiance with them and dont know the company having not heard of them before,

Shrub, I appreciate your opinion, and your honesty. I completely agree with you that I could easily find as much or more information on locksmithing on this site than I might learn in the class, but then how do I get ALOA registered? Granted, there are many tests throughout the year (I actually just missed one last weekend an hour from my house) but there is only one test in Wisconsin per year.

Well the registration is the benefit of course but cant you join the AOLA without being on a course?
I dont know as im not a member but it may be worth looking into, ive heard of people getting membership in the uk having not done a course you may just have to prove tradeing and supply a joining fee,
