curtain wheel making

hi great site wondered if any one as made many curtain wheel picks as they are expensive for what they are i decided to have a go being a plumber i seem to have loots of bit and bobs on off the easiest ways seems to get a small strong pipe one of the best i v found is diesel injection pipe mine was off East it easily fits chub 3g i run mine down on my lathe but its easily ground or filed these pipes are easy to get and as there is no demand for these they cost little from breakers the hole through them is 2 mm and easy opened up i found using welding rod woks well as it copper coated and stronge and cheep they bend very well and you can get really tight radius's which gives good movement within the curtain to date i have made 5 others have been made from solid brass pop up waste rods but you need a lathe to bore the hole through still looking at other pipes which may be suitable i even found pipes as small as 1.5 mm with .75 mm hole but cant think of use for it one question to ask can any one show me the shape of a suber try out key number 27 as i brock it and then lost the head and its the only one missing from the set if as I'm sue lots of you must have these keys i can get an image i will easy be able to make a new one or repair

Wow! That's gotta be the world's longest sentence. Not one piece of punctuation!

Good that you are so inventive. Work out the difference between souber 26 and 28 - maybe thats the 27 you are looking for. I dont have that set so cant advise further.

regards

You need to read the stickies on the euorpean sections, ive written a few guides and illusion also has,

Forget the welding wire, you will curse the day it snaps off in the lock and jams the lever pack up,
Go get yourself some piano wire,

On the try out keys you will find few people on here have them or at least have them intact as they are usually ground to make other tools or simply sold or thrown away, for their intended purpose they are crap,

Im sorry i could concentrate enough to see what the rest of your text is but i think ive answered your questions, i remember somthing about brake pipe etc, all i can tell you is forget the copper's etc and use stainless steel and at a push brass tube but alluminum and copper need to be stayed away from,

What have you done by way of turning the curtain? have you used a lip or a pin or somthing else?

How have you covered both hands of lock, have you made two tools for one lock or have you made it universal?

curtain wheel

Postby plumber carl » 20 Mar 2007 14:50

thanks shrub will get some piano wire. just making another one the pipe i used came from a vauxhall astra and its injector line which carries about 3000 psi and looks good quality. not to sure if its universal or not what i did was to drill into the out side of the pipe 1 .5 mm drill and tap it with a 0 ba tap then thread the welding rod 0 ba die its really secure and put on reasonable amount of force. i dogged leged the rod one to the left other to the right then flattened it to expend it then shaped it to square it up when in the curtain it as a few mm of play if i use thinner wire it will give even more movement and ill try this . how ever it will not go under low levers so ill look at what you suggest and try to improve the non curtain i just cut off the end of a key drilled it then taped the rod threaded it though the pipe this works well both reasonably easy to make cost next to nothing

Can you post some pictures?

If youve done what i think you have you may find that the peg becomes a hinderance after a while also what do you do when your in the other side of the door?
I assume youve got a wire running through the middle of the tube?

Can you use your enter key please
