Where can I get picks in Ireland?

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Where can I get picks in Ireland?

Postby CitizenFly » 12 Mar 2007 17:07

Hey,

Im from Ireland and was wondering where to get tools in Ireland. I currently have no credit card so am looking for shops that would sell them.
I have become interested in Lock Picking after seeing some videos and it looks like something I would enjoy as a hobby, plus would come in handy every now and then when I or friends lose key's. I would only be looking for the basic tools to start with. I have seen a video on making your own tools and will try that out as I would enjoy that.

Thanking you in advance.
:D

Welcome to the site CitizenFly. :D As you can see I am from Ireland to.
If you don't have a credit card like me you can get a "3V Prepaid Voucher Card" for free www.3v.ie

It is a "Visa Card" but you put money on it.It can be used on any site where they accept a "Visa Card".I used one of these to get my picks from www.southord.com/. There is no hassel with them and I recieved my picks
within 6 days

I have found no place in Ireland where they sell picks. So ordering them or making them is your best bet.

Hope this helps.

Before you pick a lock:
The first thing that you should do is check to make sure that
the lock is your's and secondly make sure its not in use.

There is a shop on the Quays just at the Halfpenny bridge ( on the North Side of it) that does sell them. However they are well overpriced, so go get a 3V card as suggested.

Sorry but the shop name escapes me at the moment, they sell electronic gear, including two way radios etc, you can't miss it !!!!

But like I say, don't bother, just get a card and off you go.
I suggest you use lockpicks.com ( they sponsor this site) , you will get a good discount and they mail to Ireland, fairly quick shipping and the package is "discrete" :-)

Or you could just make your own, all you need are a few new sharp files and some feelergauge or if you can get it, sweeperbristle, many other things will also be easy to grind into pick, the cheapest wooden handled steak knifes have thin blades, just the right size for grinding a pick out of, (I did say grinding, while I work mostly with files, for any really heavy mass wasting, getting rid of material til you get close to the shape where you want to carefully form the pick you can grind away all the mass,
Lots of the members here enjoy making thier own picks and even inventing variations. I think you will find this just as interesting as picking, and it will leave you with experience that you can call on anytime you would need a pick and have access to simple tools to make them. its not hard, and don't worry about templates, if you make your pick tips too large, you can re shape them smaller. the pick tips are approximately like middle cuts on a key, not to big, not too small, and its not necessary to have a full ninecut depth behind the hook, making them that large makes them less universally applicable. Make a hook and a halfdiamond, sand it real well and you will make yourself happy for a while. :)

Thanks for all the help

I actually have a 3v card, forgot about it. Put some money on it and ordered a set of picks from www.southord.com . I am going to use them as templates to make my own as spares and a set for my brother. I will probably enjoy making them as much as using them. I will post pictures of the picks I make and possible make a video. As I said I am a total newbie to the art of lock picking and have found this site very helpful. Should be getting my picks in the next week or so. Will check out that shop on the quays though, heard about it before. Any advice that any of you have, technique, locks to purchase and the like will be gratefully accepted. Looking forward to getting them, can barely wait.

Again thanks to all who've replyed and
