MACS and raking

Postby Eyes_Only » 28 Apr 2007 20:55

If you pin a lock with total disregard of MACS with a shallowest pin next the the deepest pin set up, would a regular raking method work? I know some locks with pretty progressive high/low pinning combinations can cause problems for raking so I assume it would be even worse on locks with no MACS consideration.

Ok thanks. I wanted to make sure because I didn't want to waste my time or scratch up my locks and wear out my rakes in a futile attempt to rake my mortise cylinders with no MACS. I think I'll use my schlage locks with working keys I use for bumping to practice raking.

For raking a lock pinned to or beyond MACS try a Bogota or Sabana pick.

This Sabana pick is new to me. I'll have to search for it.

The Sabana is another of raimundo's creations. It continues the naming trend of the Bogota pick.

If the bogota is ^^^
The sabana is ^--^

ASCII art doesn't do it justice, but if you own a bogota, you will see what I mean. I will try to dig up a picture tomorrow.

Here you go.

Sabanas are the bottom two, with to Bogota's for a comparison.

Rai should seriously consider getting a patent for the tools he makes before some locksmith tool manufacturer steals the designs and markets them and takes all the credit.

A tool manufacturer would only stamp them out and not bother with the correct finish, let alone the handles. And, without the finish and handles, much is lost. Sure they will still be effective, but not as wickedly and beautifully effective.

sanding and polishing is the key to all picks i think after using the bogotas, it makes a huge difference if they are nice and glassy smooth or punched out at the rate of 10 picks a second through the same die with no deburring
