Padlock Lubrication

Postby rjfc2 » 7 May 2007 14:53

Hey,
I have some ABUS padlocks that are fairly old, the cylinders do not turn smoothly so it is hard to apply the correct amount of tension when picking, so I have not yet managed to open them. I have tried spraying some WD40 into the keyway but this makes no difference. Is it possible to lubricate the cylinder itself, if so, how?
Thanks

Well its pretty much excepted that in the long term wd40 is bad for locks. but this next suggestion is probably worse for them ...

lighter fluid.

I know it sounds like a bad idea but ive used it on several gummed up locks and it seems to work a treat.

You can try some electrical contact cleaner to see if you can flush out any junk thats collected in there and then squirt whatever lube you like in it. Different people will tell you different things.

Thanks. If I squirt it through the keyway will it reach the outside of the cylinder? There is a little hole on the bottem, with a spring in it. Should I try squirting it through there?

soak it in shelitte over night and then give it a light spray of wd40, the hole with the spring in it would jusst be a drain hole.

Most likely some of the lube will come out of various places of the lock but as long as you don't spray it in there as if you were trying to empty half the can of whatever, you shouldn't have to worry about making too much of a mess. Just don't wear anything white or nice.

Maybe try using Jig-A-Loo which is odorless and greaseless, much less mess and just as effective

try using a degreaser first, something like silicone remover by wurth.
Its less harsh than thinners but should still clear the dirt incrusted
grease from inside.

Then try re lubricating after all the gunk has been cleared.
possably with wd40.

You could try brake cleaner, but that would be a last resort. It is very hazardous to breathe and if it spills out on to anything painted or dyed it will take the paint/dye right off of it.....so I would only use it for locks not attached to anything. It does evaporate quickly though.

silicone

Postby dodgechargerrt30 » 15 Jun 2007 20:16

i have silicone spray and although i have never used it as lubrication for a lock it would PROBALLY work VERY well

i use it to lube my Rubik's Cube

if WD40 does not work well i would assume Silicone Spray would Do the job

keep in mind ....i do not know for a fact

but hey if it works its like 2 dollars for a huge can*

*in most places

that's the best rhyme I've heard in a long time. It belongs in a rap song! =)

so.. is that what you call it? the rubik's cube? I tell ya bro, if it's got all different colors on each side, I'd stop lubing it up and see a doctor, make sure it's not VD.

just kiddin man, I still think that's a great rhyme.

I do have a question for all involved in this thread. I was putting an padlock back together and it was suggested to use grease to hold the ball bearings in place so while I put the core in they don't fall out of their chambers.

Is there a grease locksmiths use for this? and is it available at the local Home Depot or DIY store? I'd rather not use WD40 since its so runny, and I know enough to not use powdered graphite for the actual lock lubrication, just for the keyway.

I do like LockSaver but at $12 a can its expensive.

thanks for your input,

Squelchtone
