Edit button?

Postby Romstar » 28 May 2004 18:19

Um, I wasn't sure how to ask this or who to ask. Feel free to delete the topic once the question is answered. PM me if required.

Basically, I had an edit button for a day or so, and now I don't. Was it a limited time offer, or did I do something wrong, or did someone else decide I shouldn't have it?

Just curious. It kind of came in handy with my long posts. Sometimes my brain goes a bit faster than my fingers, and I like to fix my mistakes.

Anyway, thanks

I think that certain posts allow them in them, and some dont. You can find out by going to the very bottom of the page, and looking in the bottom right. (should say you CANNOT/CAN edit your posts in this thread or something)
I dunno who decides what can be edited or not.
I wish you could decide when you post a new topic, you could choose to let ppl edit their posts or not

oh well, my 2

You can only edit your posts in the most un-populated and un used (there fore the most useless) sections of the forum

sounds logical :)

Well guys there is a little thing up the top called a search Image button. It is kinda cool you can put in words like "edit" and do a search on it and it answers all your questions. Here are some of the links I found. And by god it answered this question. Its kinda nifty you should try it sometime. I think if our good friend technik read the below links he might work out why only stupid forums have the edit button. Also the fact these ones were setup by Varjeal.

viewtopic.php?t=2737
viewtopic.php?t=1865
viewtopic.php?t=722 - Nice run down of why certian rules are the way they are.

Btw as you can see in the rules Image (Another nifty button up there next to the search one). It states if you get something deleted just take it on the chin and deal with it. I know you didn't get your "edit" button taken off you but if you did I would message the moderators. You can do a search for moderator and I am sure you can work out who they are.

Edit button?

Postby Romstar » 29 May 2004 23:45

Well, I'd hate to be seen as the antagonistic idiot of this group, but.......

I kind of need an edit button. :P

Given the bloody length of my posts, and the fact that sometimes I make some serious typos I'd love the ability to fix the glaring errors in my posts.

I spelled thief "theif" through an entire post once. All because I wasn't watching how I typed. That's trivial of course, but sometimes a wrong word can change the entire meaning of a sentence. It also has the added problem of making me look like a boob.

My personal beef is people who can't seem to be bothered with using proper spelling, punctuation or worse yet, grammar. The internet is a medium not of graphics, but of the printed word.
At a time in history when so many people have the ability to make their opinions, views and ideas known, we are losing the ability to coherently communicate them.

The internet, entertainment industry, and to no small degree, the educational system, have created an entire generation of people who simply are unable to properly use the English language. In addition to these younger participants, we seem to have an entire category of older users who seem to require either some lessons in English, or a good swift kick for being just plain lazy.

Keep in mind, many of these older users are the same people who would have been aghast to see such butchery if it were typed or written on paper.

Many people have the mistaken idea that the internet is fleeting, that content simply vanishes into the digital ether. I can tell you, this simply isn't true. Unless every large network that makes up the internet were to suddenly crash, the things you typed and contributed five years ago, or even ten years ago are quite likely still to be found.

Almost every page of this forum is currently cached at Google, and quite possibly in other areas as well. It would be difficult to recreate the entire forum, but very likely possible to retrieve most of the content should the main server this forum exists on, crash.

Basically my question wasn't about why I don't have an edit button. It was about what happened to my edit button. I didn't previously have one, and then one day I did, and a day later I didn't. In the same place, in the same message I had previously edited. I was simply curious at the time, but I suppose now I am basically outlining why I could personally use the thing. It seemed odd to me to have it one day, and not the next. So I thought perhaps there was a reason for it.

Anyway, take care all,

Someone who loves the spoken and written word so much would understand the concept of proof reading before submission. ;) And yes you do write lengthy posts.

But seriously if you had an edit button on the same post one day and not the next we can go through the options. All of which are included in the posts listed above.
1. post moved to another forum
2. Moderators changed permissions for that forum
3. Moderators changed your ability to edit posts.

I am voting for #1. As I do not know what post you are refering to I can not tell the forum it was posted in had changed permissions, but if you look at the links provided above you shoudl be able to find what the permissions used to be. If you have any issues with #2 or #3 PM a moderator.

Oh, quite possibly. I always get those things mixed up. Come to think of it, I could mix up left and right on certain days. This is one of those days. :?

The better button is the one marked [Preview]. It doesn't matter how long my posts are and I've made some long ones, I always preview before posting. Generally, a couple of typos in a lengthy well written post go unnoticed but, if you're a perfectionist, taking the time to preview and read doesn't really take long.

Nice group here lately.

Postby Romstar » 31 May 2004 19:08

Is everyone this snippy lately?

What makes you think I don't preview? I use that button frequently. It comes in very handy. There are still mistakes from time to time, and I'm certainly not immune from them.

I like my posts to be accurate. Sometimes after rereading a post I will discover that it wasn't worded properly. It may have sounded right at the time, but in retrospect is not correct. Other times, I may have included an incorrect URL, or left out a few pieces of information.

When it comes down to serious information, I would rather my contributions were contained in a single post. Not one long post, and a correction or two.

It has the benefit of conveying my entire train of thought, and that allows people to follow the reasons for my opinions or decisions. No matter if they agree with them, or not. At least they can follow them.

In addition, it seems that people have gotten the idea that somehow I am "crying" about not havijng an edit button. Well, that simply isn't the case. I didn't have one to start with, then I did, and then again I didn't. The post is in the same forum I made it in originally, so it hasn't been moved. All of the previous suggestions do not seem to explain the appearing, disappearing edit button. That's why I asked in the first place. Everyone else coughed up posts that I had already searched and read, that did not seem to apply. Told me to preview, which I do all the time anyway, and just generally missed the point of my question.

I really don't care if I have one or not, no matter how useful it was. I would just like to know what happened. Why did I get one in the first place, and why is it no longer there?

Sorry, I was cranky.

I just got it into my head that everyone either didn't read my post, or thought that I was whining about not having an edit button.

Bad day I guess.

If its any consolation, I had and still have one of these mysterious "Edit buttons" over in the lock section today. Its prolly down to what sections of the forum has them turned on and what sections forums don't and thats whats causing the confusion...

Anyhows, im sure no-one can be that serious about an edit button so lets all just laugh at it
