I want to make one.........I figure I can print a template and put it on some thin plastic then cut it out with an razor knife.

In a device that needs to be accurate to the thousandth of an inch I don't see that working well.

What people are trying to tell you is that those particular devices need to be extremely accurate. Even the thickness of a few sheets of paper off and they wont give accurate measurements... The only way you would be able to verify that your cuts are that accurate would be with a micrometer. And if you had a micrometer, then the key measuring chart wouldn't be needed at all.

Since using a razor to cut to those depths would be pretty infeasible, perhaps you could use a file with a combination of the razor. Of course you'd need the specific brand measurements (code book) and a caliper (by the way is that would you guys mean by micrometer?).

I'd just cut the triangle out of sheet metal and then put calibration marks in it at the appropriate place (using a set of depth keys) if I really wanted to make one.

But I don't see the point. A good dial or digital caliper (with .001 inch resolution) can be had from Harbor Freight for very cheap (and you'd want one anyway to build this in the first place, as someone already pointed out). A caliper is ideal for decoding keys and isn't specific to one set of depths.

Heh, I'm glad that though everyone is making it clear that they don't see the point, you are all offering reasonable suggestions.

I'll tell you, there's always a point to the hobbyist. Even if it's been done better and more professionally by others, it's a hell of a thing to create a solution to your problem yourself.

I can't imagine anyone having a template for one of those.

Take some depth information and make your own in photoshop. It's easier for you to do that than to sweet talk someone who has one in to taking an undistorted to scale scan for you.

Yes Schuyler hit the nail on the head.............I understood that it wouldn't be 100% accurate. I like making things myself and best of all I can do it cheaper a lot of times than buying stuff. I guess I'll just use measurements to cut one....I just wanted it to be close not exact to the 1000th.
