Postby tmaxx258 » 24 Jul 2007 20:03

Well i decided to buy this lock today. It has spool pins in it so i thought a challange to pick.So i have a problem i put my tension wrench in and apply light-medium tension,I put my short hook pick in and start from back to front and i let go of the tension and i only hear 1-2 clicks witch frusterates me. Can somebody tell me what i am doing wrong?

Nothing just keep trying m8

I don't know the ACE padlock, but you say that it has spool pins, so I'll believe you!

Do you know at all how to pick a padlock, with spool pins?

It is different from the "normal" pins, you see!

Unless you apply super-light tension, you'll have to use a special spool-pin-technique!

Your "light" tension is probably not light enough, that is because you are new!(if not then forgive me)

But don't worry about it, just keep "light" tension!

Now, when you pick a lock with spool pins, the plug should/will turn a little, that is a good thing, using the special single-pin-spool-picking-technique!(SPSPT)

After the plug has turned, some of the pins(the spool pins that have made a false set) will get springy/elastic towards the tension wrench, making the tension wrench go CCW(contra-clockwise), if you allow it!

Please allow/permit the tension wrench to go CCW while keeping light tension, when the spool pin(which was false set), clicks into a "true" set position, the tension wrench will go back to it's first turned position!(if not something is wrong)

Repeat with the next false set pin, until the padlock opens, and prepare yourself for a rush of complete satisfaction!

If you have false set a spol pin you can easily find out but removeing the tension from the lock but keeping the plug turned,

Now lightly poush the pin you think youve set falsely,

If it is a false set spool pin the plug will turn back to tdc again against the wrench,

If it doesnt move then its set and if it does move but the plug doesnt then its not set at all in any state,

My guess is that there is a high pin somewhere, and you are never going to get that with a small hook

tmaxx258 wrote:I put my short hook pick in

**If a high pin is the case, you'll have to use a long hook and you'll need to apply tension from the top of the keyway, to give space to the long hook in the bottom!

tmaxx258 wrote:and start from back to front

Do not start back to front or front to back, forget that, start with the binding pin, the one that obstructs the pick, now lift that pin until there is a click(hear-feel) and then go to the next pin that is hard!(if you can't lift the pin you'll have to let go of some of that tension)

*Btw, there is one more thing: It could be a low pin(the low pins are long) and you might be lifting it too high, now imagine a long pin blocking the sheerline, then the plug can't turn!

What not to do: do not shovel your short hook pick in the keyhole, by the time you get the pick down to the 5'th pin, one of the other four pins will be liftet too high!(*see above)

Use your long hook pick, put it in the bottom of the keyway, you'll be able to reach the 5'th pin without touching the first four pins(**see above)

I spent $8 on the Ace Hardware marine version which has the brass plated shackle to ward off sea salt spray and it's one padlock on my wall that I have not been able to pick open. very good bitting and full of spool pins. I think it is a rebranded ABUS because back of the package had Copyright info for something called Dura Shackle by ABUS.. something like that, I can't remember the name now, but I was impressed that it's a rebranded ABUS.. probably a 55MB50 (Marine Brass)
