How do I pick wafer locks?

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

How do I pick wafer locks?

What toos are best to get into wafer locks? And what is the technique used?

Rake with a ball, half ball, or snowman pick.

Any kind of rake or diamond pick with a wishbone tension wrench.

It depends on the lock itself. Some wafer locks can be opened with nothing more than a ball pick, no tension. Others require a little more.
O' gods of the lockpick, let me hear the final *click*

Those jiggler picks for cars work well on wafer locks too sometimes

I prefer a flat hook, like the shallow southord one...

I personally prefer the short rake...or single ball...or snowman...and light tension

No real set motion. I simply use the technique that is getting me the most feedback from the lock. I do however start with light tension and light raking and then pay attention for set wafers. If later on most are set but the lock is still not opening I either go in with a hook pick and finish the lock off or I will start to use more of a rocking style motion with the rake. As with any lock, different methods will yield the best results from one lock to the next.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!
