Taking apart this key-in-knob thing

Postby Guitar_J » 23 Jun 2004 0:30

I know this has been asked 100 times.. but I can't seem to get it... I have this knob here.. I wanna take it apart.. but I can't get it...

I've searched several times and I found one post that said to grab the grey rod coming out of the back and hold it while turning and pulling on the key... I tried that... maybe I didn't do it right.. if this is the correct method.. can someone explain a little better? It doesn't have the little tab on the side that you can push in (as mentioned in the weiser post a little before this one)

thanks
-Josh

Yea.. I didn't think to theck the Kwikset rekeying manual... it's not a kwikset lock so I didn't think their manual would apply to it. but.. it did..

is there a weiser rekeying manual?

I've looked everywhere.

Why the devil would you want one?

The best thing to do to a Weiser is to disassemble it, add to all the other junk, and then melt it all down and sell it for scrap.

Or if you're the type it makes a good source for casting material.

Other than that, if you have to work on a Weiser, REPLACE it.

as sound advice as that is - I'm replacing the key for my parents lock...its not really re-keying as having it apart so I can make a key - if they replace it it'll only be with another weiser (much to my discontent).

that and its only for a side-shed door, no access to anything important. (and currently the anti-credit-carding latch (with 2nd semicircle prong) is COMPLETELY exposed - you can get anything as large as a ballpoint pen in and just move the latch (how we've been opening it for so long).

I wanna get a new key, and perhaps a new strikeplate/coverplate to make it at least a LITTLE secure. as I've said before, ANY help would be appreciated.
