Bunch of questions!

Postby Diphoration » 2 Dec 2007 18:04

Hi everyone, I've read the tutorial to repin a lock, and I've been wondering if we could repin a CutAway lock like the one the sell on lockpickshop (http://www.lockpickshop.com/PCYX5RSP-SCH.html) or (http://www.lockpickshop.com/PCYX5RSP.html)... Also what's the difference between Shlange and Kwikset? only the quality? Also... when they say "Right Handed" it's becasue we lock pick from the right hand right? lol

I'd like to know if we can repin them because I'd like to follow db's guide where we need to put 1 pin then 2 pin then 3... etc and I don't want to buy 4 of their cutAway lock... once with each setup of pin, it would be too expensive!

(Also just as a side question... Canada locks are pick'able with standard tools? or Europe-SlimLines are better?) (The locks I'm looking foward to pick right now are master's padlock, the cutAway lock from lockpickshop or any other site... and a WeiserLock deadbolt that I will repin if the cutAway locks aren't repin'able)

PS: Could anyone give me a real-size lock tool? so I get an idea of how big they are, thanks!

PSS: What are the "essantial" tool in a set? I've started making a custom set from the option in "build your own set" on lockpickshop and I was wondering if I had too much... I got 8 type of pick/rake and 3 type of tension tools... (S rake, C rake, Long hook, Short hook, Ball end, Big diamond, small diamond, key extractor... double ended tension wrench, twisted tension wrench (a slimline and a standard one))

Thanks alot everyone for your help =)

I nicely sanded hook, and many tension wrenches.

I would guess that they are not re-pinnable, seeing as how they charge less for the cutaway with 3 pins than they do for the one with 5 pins. If they were re-pinnable, then only idiots would buy the 5-pin because they could simply drop 2 more pins in the 3-pin product :D Then again.....

Exactly. Because these cylinders aren't mounted, they will be hand-held while picked and the exposed cutaway portion will be covered up by your hand if you buy the wrong one.

I would think that the slimmer the tools the better - as long as they are made well and won't break. But the standard SouthOrd sets sold at lockpickshop.com (product numbers like PXS-nn) will work fine for those locks.

It sounds like you picked the right basic set of tools. What I have found in the short time I have been doing this (see my join date) is that the tension wrenches play a bigger part of the "fit" puzzle than do the standard picks. The picks will fit most of the average locks that we will practice on. But the bottom of the keyways can really be a pain. I have wished I had thinner tension wrenches way more often than I have wished I had thinner picks. If the tension wrench doesn't completely fit beneath the lowest keyway ward then you have to place the tension wrench above that ward and then you are seriously squeezing the amount of room you have with which to maneuver your picks.

There's a sticky here (in the manual section I believe) with a bunch of lockpick templates. You'll find some in tehre that are either 'model size' or ones next to a ruler or something else for measurement comparison.

You know, subtract the word 'lock' from your above question, it's actualy quite sexual  .

That right Freak! I got to it before you did  .
