So I've been tinkering around with lock picking for a few months, and I've been doing pretty good, I can pick most padlocks and even a few door locks when I'm feeling motivated. Anyways, by all means I'm still a noob when it come to picking locks which brings me to my problem...
I was trying to pick the lock to my dorm room. The lock is a dead bolt lock and it is made by the BEST lock company. From what I know this cylinder is interchangeable and has 6 pins. I picked alright the first few times, but I couldn't turn it all the way to fully lock or fully unlock the deadbolt. This didn't seem to be much of a problem because I was just seeing what I could do to the lock and I didn't actually have to pick it completely for any particular reason. That was all well and good until I tried my key and found that it wouldn't go all the way into it!!! So right now I'm in beween a rock and I hard place, I'm not sure what could have gone wrong with the lock and I don't want to risk further damage trying to fool around with it, but I don't want to have to possibly pay for the maintenance fees of replacing the lock, which could cost a lot!!!
So I was wondering if anyone had any experience with locks of this type, and if they might know what when wrong and a way to fix it. If it helps at all there seems to be a bit of tension when I pick the lock again and turn it back from the half way point(about as far as I could ever really get the lock to turn), and when reset, the key goes all the way into except for the last pin seems to stop it. Any advice would be much appreciated! thanks a lot!

We normally advise people not to pick locks they rely on or is in use cos when you do, bad sh*t happens.
I'm not too familar with this lock too much as I only own a couple for practice at home and never really serviced any for work yet. I would guess maybe a master wafer got jammed perhaps? I'm sure some of our other more experienced resident locksmiths can better advise on this situation.

Did you ever pick it to the control shear line and remove the core?

Use something like a piano wire with a bent end to clear foreign objects from the keyway first. It could be a simple vandalism.
Put a little bit of Tri-flow or the like lube into the keyway and force it in with greater than normal force.
What kind of lousy landlord would charge you maintenance fee on lock malfunctions under ordinary use? In fact, if you try to pick it, they'll likely charge you for tampering with it.

The residential facilities maintenance would have a pile of rotation cores for lost keys and such. Don't mess with the lock on your home, especially if it's the only door into your home, like in your case.

Can we just start a sticky of OP posts of "I was picking my __insert type of lock in use___ and now it won't __open/close/let me insert key/some small part fell out/ its stuck 180 degrees out__ " ?
and refer to that sticky as one of the first things a newly registered user is linked to? call it "Don't pick locks that aren't yours, and don't pick locks that are being used currently on your house, shed, dorm room, office building, apt door because if you screw up and break the lock, we're not a 24/7 online locksmith support service for people who broke a lock and want to fix it for free without paying a locksmith, their facilities dept, or landlord"
Silly rabbit, locks in use are for keys.
and ONLY keys.
locks in a bench vise or in your hand are for practice picking.
Happy Holidays,

Don't forget Squelch the "I was picking someone elses lock", or the ever so great "I was picking someone elses lock and it was in use, and say it was university property".
I think when you register it should have a nice banner saying don't pick locks in use. Don't pick locks you don't own. DEFINATELY don't pick locks in use and that you don't own......
Maybe universities can start busting people who do this saying they were using burglary tools in an attempt to steal gov property (the core!) see how many idiots continue to pick their dorm room locks then.

Glad everything worked out.
But yeah, we really should start collecting a bunch of these kinds of similar threads and group them together for a Sticky. Not to make new people here feel bad but to help prevent mishaps like this one from happening too often.
Most I'm sure most will get the message. The rest who ignore the warnings given by those who have "sinned" and learned from their scary experience are either thieves or complete idiots who deserve to have to pay money or get in trouble to have to get the problem fixed anyways.

I totally agree, I just don't have much to offer on the subject. You and Selim should get writing
