Hombrew Tubular Pick?

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Hombrew Tubular Pick?

Postby rekonstrukted » 22 Jan 2008 14:31

Recently I saw a short on youtube that had some guy "picking" a tubular lock with a tubular key that appeared to have broken bobby pins attached around it for every pin. The guy gave no explanation for how it was made and in the video he appeared to pick the lock just by turning the key until the lock opened.

It gave me an idea though. I was thinking maybe a pick from a tubular key. You could shave all the depths away and attach broken bobby pins in their place with a hose clamp or something. Pick the lock by pushing each binding pin down with it's corresponding bobby pin, then once the lock is picked tighten the clamp so the bobby pins do not give way and use like a regular key (perhaps even cut a new key from the depths).

What do you guys think? Am I onto something here? Or should I scrap the idea? If there is any interest I will try to find the video again and post it.

yeah i thought so myself but i have yet to see a tutorial on making a homebrew tubular pick. i will certainly attempt the pick but i have no lock to test it on. if i find one i'll pick it up and let you guys know how it goes. if i can come up with a design that works almost as well as the commercial picks i might drop a tutorial :D

You can pick open a tubular lock using a special tension tool and push the pins backwards with a straight pick, but it locks back in place after you turn it a few degrees.

One almost needs a tubular plug spinner..

I believe this is the video he's refering to:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UNdk0JQXOg

The video omits the actual picking, and the tubular pick is preset to the proper depths.

It's a cool, cost effective idea in my opinion. I think he just cut the grooves down the whole lenght of the key's shaft and and use some metal ( flat side of bobby pins?) and an elastic. Kudos to the person who made the video!

So you would have to pick it like 7-8 times LOL....would a spinner work or do you think it would still catch(i think it would) or would it damage it cause of the brass discs?

Yes if you use a tension wrench (like in Festus' post) and a pick but no if you use a tubular lock pick like in the video or a professional one.

Tubular plug spinners? I personnaly don't like the idea, seems like there's too many issues that reduce the viability of a such tool.

I realised some of this topic has already been discussed here:

If you pick it with that special tension wrench and a straight pick, you can avoid the pins locking back up by using dental floss. (I know it sounds crazy :P). When you've got it turned just slightly so the top and bottom chambers aren't lined up, cram a bunch of dental floss (I prefer cinnamon) into it leaving a tail end for removal and push down on it with a tubular key blank that has the outside nipple ground or filed off. If it's packed in there right, you can turn it with the key blank and it should keep the pins from popping back up.
