PLUG TURNING

Postby Flipper » 30 Jan 2008 6:02

Hello everybody.

I was wondering whether you can help me figuiring out how much I have to turn the plug. I'm talking about some fairly old boxes/cellars locks type. Trying to pick my lock I found that the it was definitely breakable but I got to turn the plug 270 degress. It didn't stop after 180 degress nor after 360. I don't know how I can finally open it up.
As mentioned above, I'm talking about MY lock

Thank you in advance

You not being very descriptive in your explanation of what your doing nor what it is your doing it to.

Is the lock out of the ? if so the cam is not connected to anything and will spin freely 360 degrees

Usually on a given lock a quarter of a turn is all that is nessasary to lock/unlock a given lock.(again that depends on the lock)

a little more detail into what your dealing with (the lock) where the lock is(in a door knob,in a door,in my hand) and what it is you want to do to the lock(i want to pick it to the unlocked position)would help a great deal in helping you. Also post a pick of the lock itself and someone will be able to help you even better.

Hope this helps
W.

Same thing it's hard to say without seeing it, some locks are the rotate to take it out/open it...like gumball machines you unscrew the lid with the key...not saying its like that just that it may spin all the way around past the unlocked position.

So far I couldn't get to take any pics but I'll try to explain you the situation. I'm sorry for the lack of details.

Consider this. I'm right in front of the door of the cellar. The deadbolt is fairly old. I start picking it and after a few secs the plug turns. I think it's opening up but no way. It turns 270 degrees and it stops. Some other cellar deadbolts usually turn 180 degrees and then you have to pick em again and so on. But these old ones turn 270 degrees and I don't know why. I can't pick them when they are 180 degrees 'cause the plug moves right and left. Do you have any idea?

Even without the pictures, it would help to know a little more about the type of lock mechanism this is. Is it a pin-tumbler deadbolt, or a lever lock (which would not be that uncommon, depending on how old it is, and where you are in Italy)? Is there a keyway on both sides of the door, or does the inside have a knob?

Also, you say that it turns 270°... but then say that you can't pick it after it turns 180° "because the plug moves"? I'm slightly confused by that comment.

Oh, I'm sorry I propbably messed it up. I said that it turns 270 degrees and than it stops. Ok? It doesn't move further nor anything like this. So, I thought I had to repin it at 180 degree, trying to pick other unset pins maybe. But I can't because the plug moves right and left. I can't use the tension wrench. It seems just picked but it doesn't turn completely... I don't know if this clear it up...

I'll tell you about the type of lock tomorrow ok? Anyway, yes it should have a knob and just one keyway. And I'm almost sure, yeah I am, it is a pin-tumbler lock...

Thank you again

No, if the plug is turning then it's already been picked.

You might be dealing with a Euro-profile cylinder. If so, the cam probably isn't engaged, which would prevent the cylinder from moving the bolt. Check this thread for more info:
