my first lock

Postby TaylorB » 24 Feb 2008 20:38

I just picked my first lock two days ago, it was AWESOME!! Lockpicking has always interested me, and I found this site and couldn't stop reading. I made a tension wrench and hook that night. I wasn't even sure it would work, but it sounded cool so I tried it. I started on my back door lock, just playing around and I got it open after a couple of minutes. I got hooked been opening locks in my free time, and plan to make a rake tonight. :) :

It's a rush the first time you get it isn't it?

Go ahead and make that rake but really try to learn to pick with the hook. When I first started I used the rake a lot because it was faster on the cheaper locks I was practicing with. But when you get into better made locks you'll be much better off if you learn to use the hook and pick each pin separately (SPP, single pin picking). Locks built with tighter tolerances are difficult to rake. I kinda had to re-learn to SPP because all my practice locks were so easy to rake that I relied on it too much. Now I have a collection of better locks and I'm struggling to get the feel back for SPP. It's coming back though. :)

Also keep in mind that picking a lock improperly can permanently damage the lock. It would be in your best interest to buy a couple of locks to practice on. Get a padlock and a deadbolt from your local hardware store or Wal Mart type store. You don't want to risk damaging a lock that you use to secure your house or other belongings.

Keep at it and have fun. :)

Ya wait till you get a new lock and you're super pumped to open it, although you work at it for a few hours and cant get it...but finally when you go to sleep at 3am all you dream about is crazy James Bond type of lock picking stuff.

Seems like what ever you have done alot of that day, crosses over when you go to sleep...

Grats to all picking their first locks. I watched my buddy pick his first lock the other day. Watching the smile slowly spread across his face as the plug turned definitely took me back.

Yeah, I just picked my first lock the other day. I did it with a old Master pad lock. So far I've picked the lock about 40 times and I still get that feeling inside when it opens.

Congradulations :D

Niice. i Just picked the 3 cylinder locks around my house (i was locked out(stupid moms)) all i needed was two paper clips, a hammer, and a lighter. i sat there and lighted the end of it(i put my bend at 80 degrees for i think it's more maneuverable) until it was hot enough to flatten with the hammer. !thank god i could get into the garage for the supplies! i picked my door and got in =D but i did the rest of the doors the rest of the day. If your like me you were addicted before you even tried it. Now it is a great hobby. But i got some nooby questions.whats the different between a padlock and an average american cylinder? And is it possible to pick a car door(america)?

1. You should not pick locks that are not yours or that are in use or that you have no permission for. The locks can break from picking, so I would advice to stay away from the door locks in your house. Better is that you go and buy one new lock cylinder, like Kwikset/Weiser, and try picking that. In the end it is repinnable so you can easily practice with it to become more proficient with picking :)

2. The difference is nothing, if both locks have the same cylinder. But as there are thousands of different door locks and thousands of different padlocks, there are variations.

3. And yes it is possible to pick a car door, but it is not to be talked on these open forums, as it is an advanced topic reserved for the advanced access area.

Welcome to the forum! :)
