modifing a mortise cylinder into rim cylinder

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

modifing a mortise cylinder into rim cylinder

Postby Squelchtone » 26 Feb 2008 21:12

I have a cylinder that I noticed had both mortise threading as well as the 2 holes drilled in the back of the shell to install it as a rim cylinder.

The trouble is that the cam on the back is for a mortise lock installation, and there is no way to attach a rim lock tailpiece. I need to install this in a door with an existing rim lock, so a way had to be found to mate the two parts together.

The plug installed in this lock is clearly meant for mortise use, but a Dremel tool quickly converts the cam to accept a rim cylinder tailpiece.

Here is the finished product:

Very nice job but errrrr....................why???? :?

I mean why can you not just fit a standard rim cylinder to your lock. Unless I am missing something here, it looks like you have made something (very well) that didnt need making!

But good tutorial and good pics.

Ahh yes, I forgot to mention why. The front doors of the building are mortise cylinder which these obviously are and it is a very restricted ASSA keyway and sidebar. The building owner wanted the same locks on the back door but it is not a mortise door lock. There is a Yale rim lock and he wanted everything keyed alike, so all I am doing is putting in an ASSA cylinder into the existing lock work. I do not have this keyway/sidebar combo in rim style plugs with proper tailpieces (nor do I think I could easily obtain them at this point)

I'm surprised this type of adapter piece is not already made and sold.

cheers

I think I mainly did it for the hack value

good ole Yankee ingenuity. =)

Do you have any good stories of having to MacGuyver something to make a lock work or fit?
