HERE are the most common and some not so common lock brands out there.
The how many pins is not something you can usually tell by looking at the face of the lock. I've had Schlage locks where I think its 5 pin, but it turns out to be 6 pins. The keyway looks the same for both.
The more you learn brand and model numbers the more you will remember. Like a Master No.3 padlock is always 4 pins, or a Kwikset KW1 deadbolt is always 5 pins, and an ASSA V10 commercial lock is always 6 pins. etc etc.
I think others have posted how to use a hook pick to click each pin and count them.
