this isn't something you can learn in a short timeframe. There are countless varieties and brands out there. For some of the most common locks check out the stickies in the Locks forum. For a hobbyist to learn every lock would cost a fortune. Even for a professional locksmith its an ongoing process.

And just a side note: you didn't ask for anything in this thread but you did in at least 2 others... its generally considered impolite to solicit others to give you something. Asking for free locks and picks will likely only get you some less than pleasant replies.

It all depends on what area of the world you live in. I assume you're not from the States?
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

Using a straight probe (an upside down half-diamond works well for this) you can lift all the pins in the cylinder and count the clicks as you slowly pull the tool out. Each click is a pin.

You will probably never be able to tell how many pins every lock has just by looking at the face because many locks can have different amounts of pins depending on the grade or application, and a large percentage of locks out there are no-name knockoffs.

HERE are the most common and some not so common lock brands out there.

The how many pins is not something you can usually tell by looking at the face of the lock. I've had Schlage locks where I think its 5 pin, but it turns out to be 6 pins. The keyway looks the same for both.

The more you learn brand and model numbers the more you will remember. Like a Master No.3 padlock is always 4 pins, or a Kwikset KW1 deadbolt is always 5 pins, and an ASSA V10 commercial lock is always 6 pins. etc etc.

I think others have posted how to use a hook pick to click each pin and count them.
