Hey their, im kinda new to lock picking and i was wondering if you could give me any info on my current lock im trying to crack, it is a Medeco 6 pin door lock that is built in to my door ( figure it would be handy to know how to pick if i ever get locked out ) I can post pictures of the key and outside of the lock if that helps, I have watched as many videos as i can find but figure any tips or walk through of it would be great.

the only advice i can give you is, dont pick locks in use....get a practice lock to try your skills on....that may be a lock thats too hard for you to open anyway...

I'll go ahead and get the obligatory stuff out of the way:

1) Don't pick locks that are in use or that you depend on.
2) Medeco locks are high security locks, and as such any discussion of picking them is limited to the restricted Advanced section of the forums.

Your best bet for starting out is to get a cheap Kwikset cylinder and start on digital_blue's excellent guide here:

Thanks a ton for the quick replies, ok i will stop trying on that lock, i didn't know that you shouldn't pick a lock thats in use so thats good to know. Sorry i didn't know that Medeco's were high security locks i wont talk about them i guess and thanks for linking the guide it was an excellent read im going to try the stuff suggested in there tomorrow.

Although it's true that we don't discuss picking Medeco locks in the public forum, and it's equally true that it's a generally bad idea to practice on locks that are currently in service, I'll add to the above by mentioning that the lock you were trying to pick is CRAZY HARD to pick in any conventional sense.

We're not talking "Boy, that's a tough lock" here. We're talking "Are you out of your stinkin' mind????" ;)

Having said that, it's worth doing a bit of homework and seeing just what exactly is going on inside that lock you've got there, 'cause it's interesting to say the least. It's hard not to be impressed when you look at how a Medeco differs from a conventional pin tumbler lock... especially when you're new to this.

Mind you... I have a sneaking suspicion that the veil is coming off the Medeco locks in the very near future... but we'll just have to wait for that. 8)

Good luck and happy picking!

you wanna get through a door with a medeco on it, go see the movie "no country for old men" and get yourself a high pressure bottle of gas and a cattle killing stun hammer

Oh, and let us know how it works out

Sorry friend, I'm afraid that Medeco cylinders are absolutely pickproof and anyone claiming to have dominated them mercilessly is a lier :-)

Yeah JK_theCJer i saw your video and I must say they are pick proof and anyone who says other wise is a Liar ;P. Thanks DB for the insight on the Medeco i have moved on to lower grade stuff, im on a no name 40mm Chinese Lock but it will have to wait as one of my friends snapped my small hook and i don't want to get in the habit of raking with my snake rake. Right now I'm working on Master locks any insight on where to go from here would be great.

next step would be a cheap deadbolt lock. Kwikset, Brinks, Mountain Security, and a host of other $15 or less deadbolts would be a great lock to learn with. When you go shopping look for "double cylinder" deadbolts, ones that use a key to open from the inside and outside. That way you get two locks in one package for only a few dollars more than a single cylinder.
