Postby Artkrp » 10 Jul 2008 6:07

Hi guys.

I just got a 12$ Brinks American 1105 rip-off. SOooooo the $1000.00 question is.......How do I get the cylinder out of this thing?I checked www.hamptonproducts.com which was absolutely useless. Checked search for about 20 mins with no results. Thanks guys!

distructive

Postby raimundo » 10 Jul 2008 6:41

Im not sure you can do that in a non destructive way, but there is a visible pin i the edge of the lock, this is most likely the thing that holds the cylinder in, open the lock and look down the shackle hole to see if there is any way to reach this pin from inside. I don't have the lock here so Im not sure if the pin is on the schackle hole edge.
that pin, maybe hardened and press fitted' it could even be splined.
I think that if you take an american brand padlock apart, (screw inside shackle hole) you will be looking at a very similiar cylinder.
Wake up and smell the Kafka!!!

They can be removed by drilling out the retaining pin in the side. You must have bits capable of drilling hardened steel though. Basic drill bits from wal-mart won't do it. A cobalt commercial grade bit is a good one to use. The only place that carries them I have found is Sears.

It's an obnoxious task. My friends and I beat the hell out of one to get it apart a while back. It was miserable.

We had NO idea what we were doing, to be sure, but still, miserable.

Sweet. Thanks for the info guys. Guess I'll take it into a locksmith. Maybe they won't charge me a boat-load. How difficult is it if you have the right bits?
Thanks for the help guys!

If you have the right bits, a drill press can work wonders.

Only heavy tools we had access to was an angle grinder. Not the correct tool for the job, but it got us there eventually.

If you think you'll be drilling more cores down the line, I'd pick up a cheap press (Home Depot sells one for 100). They do a nice clean job as opposed to a hand drill bouncing all over the lock.
