Wood Handle Hook

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Wood Handle Hook

Postby Kai » 11 Aug 2008 8:31

Made this for the Goso pick contest at keypicking.com.

My first attempt at using wood. Would love to get some input.

It's beautiful!

What was the pick material you used?

Very fancy! What kind of wood is it (very nice grain) and what kind of sealant did you use on it?
There's nothing what can't be done with a lil Trailer Park Ingenuity.

I like the flow of the piece, and you did an excellent job on the stain. It's a good looking short hook.

If it is anything like the wood handled picks I have made I hope you have lots of space in your tool case so it doesn't get dinged up. Also not the most practical since it's like trying to get feedback through a wood block.

Ignore that though, as per rules of the comp it shouldn't matter, as it is a fine looking tool indeed.

Agreed. The wood is not the best choice for feedback. I think this could be largely negated with some harder wood. This one was made with 7 layers of birchwood ply. There is wood glue between each layer and a line of JB Weld running the length of the pick inside. The outside has a couple coats of clear gloss polyurethane. So for being made of wood, it's pretty solid. But yah, echo through the wood is a little muffled.

Thanks for the kind words. Making another one right now that should be a little nicer. Will post it here.

No, he isn't, but with picks like that he bloody well should be.

You should enter one of those beauties Kai. The only thing is you have to send it off to Schuyler to be judged by a team of pickers and it is kind of a charity thing. Check it out here.

I don't remember what the prize is going to be. Bragging rights? I think there is some swag involved. Check it out.

Oops. I accidentally linked you to LN21's pick thread. This
http://www.lockpicking101.com/viewtopic.php?t=37984 is the contest thread.

This time I am sure.

Many thanks to all :) I was pretty happy with the way the 2nd one turned out. Will be playing around with the wood some more. Need to find sheets of much harder wood.

Appreciate the link to the contest. Will have to see if I've got the time to make another. Don't know if I should enter a pick I already entered somewhere else. But sounds like it's for a good cause.

Etheir way I'll put together a How-to in case people are curious.

Thanks again
Kai

of course Your more than welcome to enter mate, i would have said something in the rules otherwise, you have a fine pick there and you stand a hell of a good shot at winning.

Good luck.
